Individuals with a solid foundation in human values are often better prepared to navigate the complexities of life and work. These values play a pivotal role in achieving long-term success and fulfilment, both personally and professionally. They also foster the development of essential life skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making, which are crucial for excelling in academics, careers, and personal relationships.
Understanding the importance of these principles, Apeejay Education, committed to the holistic development of its students, annually confers the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values. This prestigious award honours students who exemplify honesty, integrity, and a commitment to upholding these timeless virtues. Meet one such student – Maleeha Syeda Ahmed, a class IX (now Class X) student at Apeejay School, Saket.
In an impromptu interview, she talks about the values that are important, among other things.
Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a student of Class X; I am still exploring my options. I went through three rounds of interviews and a written exam for this award. I was thrilled that I came to know that I had got this prestigious award. I love reading, especially fiction.
What values are most important to you?
For me, it’s not about defining values but imbibing them. You can be illiterate and still demonstrate great values. The most important ones for me are generosity, loyalty, kindness, and dedication. What inspired me about Dr Stya Paul is his determination and how he persevered through hardships. Despite being a person with disabilities, he overcame obstacles and created an amazing chain of schools. His dedication and resilience are qualities I want to emulate.
How do you live by these values in today’s “I, me, myself” world?
It’s challenging, as we live in a society where showing off often takes precedence over moral values. Sometimes, I feel demotivated when people don’t treat me the way I treat them. But I remind myself that what others think shouldn’t matter, and I try to treat everyone equally.
What values have you imbibed from your parents?
From my father, I’ve inherited leadership qualities. I enjoy taking the lead in group projects or class assemblies, ensuring everyone’s voice is heard. From my mother, I’ve learnt generosity. She’s very giving to anyone in need, and observing her has influenced me deeply.

What values have your teachers taught you?
I joined this school in class II. One underrated but significant value I’ve learnt is confidence. When I joined Apeejay School, I was very shy, but the teachers helped me build my confidence. Now, I feel comfortable and outspoken, and it’s thanks to their guidance.
Are you involved in any charity or volunteer work?
Yes, occasionally. I participate in the school’s Interact Club programmes, like the recent “Donate One Potato, One Onion Each” campaign. I also help my mother distribute food to the needy on special occasions. I sometimes use the money I’ve saved from gifts to help people in need.
What’s one act of kindness you’d suggest to others?
I’d suggest donation — it’s the easiest way to help. You can donate food, clothes, or even blood. Sharing what you don’t need with those who do can make a big difference.
How do you think these values will help you in your professional life?
They’ll help in interviews and professional interactions. For instance, during interviews for this award, I didn’t have to prepare much; I could speak from the heart. These values also enhance soft skills, which are essential in today’s world. They can help in roles that involve NGOs or government schemes to support those in need. I believe human values not only help individuals but also contribute to society and the nation. We should strive to uphold them in our lives and careers.
