‘The Archer’, By Paulo Coelho – A BOOK REVIEW

The Archer by Paulo Coelho is a work of literary fiction. It’s a fast-read of around 130 pages comprising illustrations and texts. The book revolves around a conversation between a master of archery and a young boy intrigued to learn the art.

An inspirational read that focuses on self-discovery that awakens the hidden passion within you. It not only talks about following one’s heart, but also about embracing life as a journey and finding the courage to chase your dreams.

Tetsuya, a man once famous for his impressive skills with a bow and arrow, is retired from public life. He is content with his own small-living life working as a carpenter. One day, he has a visitor, a boy keen to learn, who comes with many questions about their common interest – Archery.

Through his teachings, Tetsuya takes us on a ride to concede and then accept the tenets of a meaningful life with wisdom, benevolence, simplicity and elegance. Often we’re keener on learning new things and practices, but this book teaches that unlearning outdated practices at the same time is important too.

The storyline of the book is kept quite simple to make us understand the deeper meaning. It gives out significant life lessons by keeping bow and arrow as the base of the book. A beautifully written book, consisting of simple elements and universal truths.

The writing style is fresh, crisp and engaging, making it suitable to be finished in one sitting. The best part about Coelho’s work is that its language is sublimely simple and very beginner-friendly.

It’s an ideal blend of fiction and non-fiction along with fable-like illustrations that makes it a must read.

Few of my learnings from The Archer by Paulo Coelho are:

1. One’s intentions in life should be clear, straight and balanced.

2. When you let go of everything superfluous and unneeded, you clear your plate for your own

betterment.

3. Take your time with the opportunities that you’ve been waiting for so long, don’t rush. Be

thoughtful and gentle in what you do.

I highly recommend this book for readers who are looking for a feel-good and light read.
