Remembering the heroes of the nation and walking down their path

Mahatma Gandhi is remembered for many reasons. He is the ‘Father of the Nation’, his contribution towards the freedom of the nation is exemplary. But ahead of everything else, his principles and values of non-violence, satyagraha and truthfulness still stand tall.

People from all walks of life practice his teachings and gain unbelievable results in their life. It is therefore essential that the future citizens of the nation, the students learn about the values both preached and practiced by the father of the nation. To introduce students with the values practiced by the Mahatma during his life, Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his birth anniversary on October 2.  

Not only Indians but also foreigners find him motivational that is why United National General Assembly announced in 2007 that 2^nd October would be celebrated as International Day of Non-Violence.

To revere the occasion, a special morning assembly was conducted at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, Jalandhar. The assembly was organised by all the students of class 8. The school choir sang many of Gandhi Ji’s favourite bhajans such as ‘Vaishnav Janto‘ and ‘Raghu Patti Raghav Raja Ram‘. The entire school compound reverberated in the mystical tunes of the hymns. 

Students also presented an insightful skit depicting the life and philosophies practiced by the iconic leader. It was followed by a soulful; rendition of the iconic Gandhian song: ‘Dedi Hame Azaadi Bina Khdag Bina Dhaal Sabarmati ke Sant tune kar diya kamaal‘.

Students in the audience were surprised to learn that October 2 also marks the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri, a celebrated Indian politician and statesman who served as the second Prime Minister of the nation from 1964 to 1966.  An interactive talk along with an enactment on Lal Bahadur Shastri’s life was performed by the students. Students also read out some of his most notable quotes: “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” and “We must fight for peace bravely as we fight the war.”

Ms. Sangeeta Nistandra, Principal of the school, encouraged students to follow Gandhian wisdom and practice those values in their life. She said, “We at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi,  believe in man-making and nation-building. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, let us pay our tribute to the messiah of non-violence and let us also remember Lal Bahadur Shastri, who famously said, “We believe in peace and peaceful development, not only for ourselves but for people all over the world.””

All the students were imbued with Gandhian values and thoughts and pledged to become responsible citizens of the nation.
