Power of hope, empathy and resilience

Covid-19 was a worldwide pandemic that posed a major challenge for doctors and became a subject of intense research for scientists. It turned into a nightmare for those who suffered and lost loved ones, while leaving a lasting impact on survivors like myself. I belong to the latter group. My family and I experienced the disease first-hand, which led to isolation, separation from our parents, and being taken care of by others. We lived in constant fear of the worst happening, but eventually, we were relieved when we were able to reunite with our parents.

It all started with my younger sister falling ill with a fever, followed by my mother, who became severely affected. Thankfully, our neighbours and family friends extended a helping hand, providing us with three meals a day. My father took charge of running errands while also caring for us. Unfortunately, I contracted the virus as well and was isolated with my mother and sister.

As time passed, my mother’s condition worsened, and she required hospitalisation. Watching her being taken away in an ambulance felt like a part of me was being taken away too. Meanwhile, my sister and I remained at home, staying strong. Suddenly, my father’s situation took a sudden turn for the worse, and he urgently needed hospitalisation as well. I was left alone with my sister, unprepared for the circumstances we faced.

During this critical time, my mother’s school friend, Jaya Aunty, came to our rescue. She was like an angel sent by God to help us. Jaya Aunty fearlessly took two COVID patients at her home. While our parents fought for their lives in the hospital with oxygen support, my sister and I slowly recovered at Jaya Aunty’s house.

Fortunately, our prayers were answered, and my mother’s condition gradually improved. The day finally came when she was discharged from the hospital, and we got to see her after 16 long days. After 24 days, our father also returned home, and it felt like we had our lives back. This experience made us realise the true value of family and friends.

Our family friends became pillars of support, and it taught me the importance of helping others. It became clear that a true friend is one who stands by you in times of need. I am grateful to God that we all made it through safely.
