Young learners celebrate India’s Handloom heritage at Apeejay School, Tanda Road
Pre-primary students explore natural fibres, learn about khadi and discover the importance of supporting Indian weavers
The Pre-primary Wing students of Apeejay School, Tanda Road, Jalandhar, celebrated National Handloom Day through a vibrant and engaging learning experience that introduced the young learners to India’s rich handloom heritage. The celebration aimed to develop awareness about traditional Indian textiles, natural fibres and the invaluable contribution of weavers and artisans to the country’s cultural legacy.
The activity began with an interactive introduction to different types of fabrics. Students explored and identified natural fibres such as cotton and silk, gaining a basic understanding of their textures, appearance and uses. Through age-appropriate discussions and demonstrations, the children were encouraged to observe the differences between various fabrics and develop curiosity about how the clothes they wear are made.
The young learners were also introduced to the significant role played by Mahatma Gandhi in promoting khadi. The session highlighted how khadi became a symbol of self-reliance, dignity of labour, and India’s freedom movement. The students listened with enthusiasm as they learned about the importance of valuing indigenous products and supporting traditional crafts.
An important aspect of the celebration was the message of Vocal for Local. The children were encouraged to appreciate Indian-made products and understand why supporting local artisans and weavers is important for preserving traditional skills and livelihoods. The interactive activities helped them connect the concept of local craftsmanship with everyday choices in a simple and meaningful manner.
The celebration provided the students with an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom through observation, interaction, and hands-on exploration. It also encouraged values such as respect for artisans, appreciation of Indian traditions, and pride in the country’s diverse cultural heritage.
The activity successfully blended learning with creativity and awareness, inspiring the children to recognise the significance of preserving the country’s textile heritage and celebrating the skills of its talented weavers and artisans.
