Akansha Goel is the Human Resource recruiter at Quess, a leading business services provider. An alumna of Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC) in Jalandhar, Akansha pursued her MBA in HR and Marketing and eventually joined the field she was always passionate about. In this interview, the HR professional shares about her journey and gives advice to the young minds at Apeejay. Read edited excerpts:

What does a normal work day look like?

My company is a business consultancy firm. We have many clients, especially the top IT clients and leading banks. We have to do the recruitment, handle the documentation process and also the on-boarding work. I work from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm and it is quite busy during those hours.

Any special memories from the AIMETC Years?

I gained a lot in confidence at AIMETC. I overcame my stage fright while working on stage during the freshers events. And it was through various activities that I gained self-belief.

How were the teachers?

They were too good and super cooperative. I must mention that each teacher was a master in their particular subject. They were always helping each student in all aspects of their life. Gurus! True teachers indeed they were!

But what motivated you to join HR?

I am very talkative by nature. To say this positively means I have good communication skills. (laughs) I am always happy to talk with people, understand them and manage their queries. This made me realise I was tailor made for HR services.

Skills for being a good HR official?

Confidence and good communication skills. Now, this doesn’t mean one has to be fluent in English. It only means the other person is able to understand completely and clearly what you have to say.

One advice for the current students?

Listen to the teachers. Their advice is the stepping stones to success.

Finally, did the college train you well for the placement?

Yes! I even got a campus placement in the banking sector but I declined it as my interest was in HR. The teachers trained me so well. Be it resume writing or interview facing skills, I was properly trained and thanks to this experience, I aced other interviews in life.
