Two-tier exam system for Science, Social Science from 2026: CBSE

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to introduce a two-tier exam system for Science and Social Science in Classes XI and X from the 2026 Board exams. The change follows the model already in place for Class X Mathematics, offering students the choice between standard and advanced levels.

The move aims to enhance conceptual understanding while catering to diverse academic interests. The standard level will focus on core concepts, while the advanced level will encourage deeper exploration and critical thinking. Students opting for the latter will receive a supplementary question paper with higher-order questions. Both exams will be conducted on the same day at the same exam centre.

CBSE officials have confirmed that the syllabus will retain a common core, with specific topics designated for in-depth study at the advanced level. New textbooks, incorporating additional content for Science, Social Science, and Mathematics, will be introduced for the 2026-27 academic session.

This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and seeks to offer flexibility to students. Those inclined toward STEM fields such as engineering and medicine can opt for the advanced level in Science, while others can choose the standard level. Similarly, the advanced level in Social Science will provide a more analytical approach to history, geography, and economics, while the standard level will emphasise real-world applications.

CBSE is also considering renaming and restructuring the Mathematics exam to align with the new system. To ensure smooth implementation, comprehensive teacher training programs will be conducted. The curriculum committee, which approved the proposal in November, believes this step will reduce reliance on coaching centers and better prepare students for higher education by fostering early engagement with complex concepts.
