The Habit That Changed Everything: How Reading Shaped My Growth and Writing Journey

If I had to name one habit that changed the entire course of my personal and professional life, it would be reading. What began as a simple effort to understand myself and the world better soon became the foundation of my mindset, growth, and eventually, my journey as an international author.
During my undergraduate days, I never imagined that the books I casually picked up would one day become my teachers, mentors, and silent motivators. I started reading just to fill my time, but gradually I realized that every page carried a lesson powerful enough to shape my thoughts, discipline, and direction in life.
Among the many books that left a lasting impression on me, How to Talk to Anyone by Leil Lowndes taught me the essence of connection, confidence, and emotional intelligence. The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel changed the way I looked at value, time, and decision-making, not just in finance but in life itself. Atomic Habits by James Clear helped me understand that true success is not created overnight, but through small consistent steps that compound into transformation. And one of the most recent books I have been reading, Unlocking Unicorn Secrets, opened my perspective toward innovation, resilience, and how extraordinary ideas are often born from ordinary beginnings.
These books did much more than improve my knowledge. They changed how I saw myself and the world around me. They taught me discipline, patience, and the courage to keep improving every day. Slowly, this habit of reading became my source of inspiration for writing and research.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Akanchha Singh at Apeejay Stya University, I took my first step into the world of academic writing and co-authored my first book chapter. Later, my journey reached an incredible milestone when I became an international author with Taylor and Francis (Routledge). Even now, it feels surreal to think that it all started with reading just a few pages each day.
Today, while balancing my role as an Accounts Executive, pursuing my M.Com, and working toward my ACCA qualification, I still make time to read. Not as an obligation, but as a way to connect with myself, to reflect, and to grow.
To every student, professional, or dreamer reading this, remember that the most powerful investment you can ever make is in yourself, and books are the greatest companions on that journey. Read not to escape reality but to understand it better. Read not to impress others but to improve yourself.
Because sometimes, a single line from a book can change your life forever, if only you are willing to turn the next page.
