Mousumi Jana’s daughter Adira Jana joined Apeejay School, Nerul, in 2020. Even without being able to physically go to school yet, the mother says she has never felt that her daughter, who is now in kindergarten, is missing out on traditional classrooms, thanks to the teachers who make the most of online classes. In an interview, the mother, a former schoolteacher herself, shares her overall experience. Edited excerpts:

Tell us about your experience with Apeejay School, Nerul.

My experience has been very good. Last year, my then four-year-old was introduced to the concept of a formal school for the first time. So, we were a little anxious about how well a child, as young as her, would adapt to online classes. But seeing how good the staff is, all my worries have been put to rest. The teachers are working very hard and handling young children really well.

What kind of activities does an online class entail?

During an online class, teachers do not immediately jump to the topic of the day. The class begins with morning prayers, followed by warm-up exercise, after which the teacher interacts with the students individually. Each of these activities help in developing their interest and they look forward to the classes.

How is a topic explained in the class?

Teachers employ interesting techniques. They prepare PowerPoint presentations for all subjects and use real objects to explain a concept or design some art and craft around it. They only have textbooks for mathematics and English, but they also use placards and other items to make the class more interesting.

How has your daughter progressed in these two years of school? Any particular quality that you have noticed?

My daughter’s spoken English is improving. Besides, her confidence levels have also increased, especially because each and every student is encouraged to speak on any topic that is being taught in class. The overall progress is good.

Was it someone’s recommendation or your research that made you pick Apeejay School, Nerul?

My own research. I was brought up in Navi Mumbai, so I know about the schools here. I always wanted to send my daughter to Apeejay School, Nerul. So far, I have only experienced their online teaching, which, according to me, is very good. I am eager to visit the school physically as well.

Do the teachers help parents as well?

Every single time. Adira’s class teacher Simmi Sharma is very helpful, not to mention her impeccable teaching skills. She has been teaching my daughter’s class since nursery, and parents specially requested that she be allowed to continue teaching in kindergarten also. We initially thought this would not be possible, but I am really thankful to the coordinator for understanding and accepting our request. We are all very happy.
