‘Placement season can be stressful, but I treated every interview as a learning opportunity’
Apeejay student reflects on her journey from classroom learning and internships to securing a job offer from India’s first research-based strategic communications consulting firm
For Sharan Matharu, pursuing a PGDM at Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC) with a specialisation in Marketing and Communication has been a journey driven by passion, learning, and professional growth. Deeply interested in branding, strategic communication, content creation, and public relations, he gained valuable industry exposure through internships and projects with startups, agencies, and organisations. Recently securing placement as an Associate at Astrum, one of India’s leading reputation management and communications consultancies, Sharan reflects on how AIMC’s practical learning environment, faculty mentorship, and industry-focused training helped shape his professional journey.
How did you prepare for the placement process?
My preparation focused on three key areas:
* Building a strong understanding of communication, branding, public relations, and current affairs.
* Regularly updating and refining my resume, portfolio, and LinkedIn profile.
* Practicing interview questions, case discussions, and mock interviews to improve confidence and communication skills.
I also researched the company thoroughly, understood its work, clients, and industry positioning, which helped me answer questions more effectively during the interview process.
How did Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication and faculty members help you prepare for the placement rounds?
Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication played a significant role in my placement journey. The curriculum provided both theoretical knowledge and practical exposure through projects, presentations, industry interactions, and internships. The faculty members were always approachable and supportive. They guided us on resume building, interview preparation, professional communication, and industry expectations. Their feedback helped me identify my strengths and areas of improvement, which boosted my confidence during the placement process.
Skills important to crack placements with ease
The following skills are essential:
* Strong communication and presentation skills
* Critical thinking and problem-solving ability
* Awareness of industry trends and current affairs
* Confidence and professionalism
* Adaptability and willingness to learn
* Time management and teamwork
*Technical knowledge is important, but employers also look for candidates who can communicate effectively, think strategically, and work collaboratively.
Most importantly, trust the process and remain patient.
How did you stay motivated and consistent during the placement season?
I stayed motivated by focusing on my long-term career goals rather than individual outcomes. Placement season can be stressful, but I treated every interview as a learning opportunity.
Maintaining a routine, preparing consistently, and learning from every interaction helped me stay positive. The encouragement from faculty members, friends, and family also played a major role in keeping me motivated throughout the process.
What are your future aspirations?
My aspiration is to build a successful career in strategic communications, public relations, reputation management, and brand consulting. I want to work on impactful campaigns, contribute to meaningful brand narratives, and continuously develop my expertise in the communications industry. In the long term, I aim to become a communications leader who helps organizations build trust, strengthen their reputation, and create lasting impact through effective storytelling and strategic communication.
