As part of the British Council Project on Mental Health Among Indian Adolescents, a group of Apeejay School, Model Town students delivered a very inspiring theatrical production entitled “Voices Unheard, Hearts Connected”, representing the complicated realities of adolescence and the role mental health should play.
This was an incredible show and truly an eye-opener as to how we all feel and think, as well as how adolescent humans struggle with these feelings. This play incorporated amazing storytelling, deep and meaningful dialogues and powerful enactments to take the audience through the struggles and pains of a teenager in society. Identity crisis, academic pressures and family issues, parental communication breakdown, societal issues such as social media influences and the quest for our own worth, were depicted in an unforgettable way.
The students also showed maturity and creativity in presenting the problems and made people really think about teenage emotions. Every scene pointed to the importance of sympathy, understanding and talking to young people in order to help their mental well-being.
One fascinating element of the show was that it had a worldwide outlook. The students logically contrasted the situation of the Indian teenagers to that of teenagers in countries like the USA, Finland and Japan. The show highlighted a similarity in adolescent challenges across these varied regions, in doing so suggesting mental health as a global issue.

The event succeeded in strengthening the notion that every young person’s voice matters. It was evident that opportunities should be made for young people to feel safe, to voice their concerns and to access support.
“Voices Unheard, Hearts Connected” was far more than a staged event. It served as a powerful and necessary call to action for awareness, empathy and shared responsibility regarding the mental health of young people throughout the world.
