Mr. Tanuj Garg’s son, Viaan Garg, a class 2 student at Apeejay School, Noida, had a speech articulation problem. With therapy, the constant efforts of his parents and the encouragement coupled with the special attention given by the teachers at school, Viaan has been able to recover almost completely. In an interview, Mr. Garg throws light on the successful resolution of the problem courtesy the instrumental role by the teachers at school. Edited excerpts:

Why did you choose Apeejay School, Noida, over other schools for Viaan’s admission?

We were living abroad initially. When we came back to India, we applied to a few schools for Viaan’s admission.  Apeejay School, Noida was one of them. The immensely good reputation that Apeejay Noida enjoys in the city was a crucial reason behind zeroing down on the school. Therefore, we didn’t have any hesitation in getting our child enrolled here.

Please tell us a bit about Viaan and guide us through his progress at school?

Viaan was more into indoor games initially. However, since the past one year, we started keeping him engaged in different outdoor activities. Now he enjoys cricket and lawn tennis a lot. He has also joined a cricket academy recently.

Viaan loves to draw, he is really into art.  He has started performing very well since joining the school. His favourite subjects are Art, Maths, Hindi and Science. Apart from English, he likes all the other subjects.

Are the students well-supported and engaged by the teachers?

We are very happy with Viaan’s current class teacher Ms. Nisha. She is really putting in a lot of hard work. I think all the teachers at the school are teaching very well. Nisha Ma’am takes the feedback from the parents very seriously and she is very good as a teacher.

What is the best thing about Apeejay School, Noida?

I think it has to be the teachers. They take the feedback of a parent very positively and give proper time to all the students. My child was suffering from a speech articulation problem. He was having a problem in pronouncing the words with the sounds of Ka, Ra and other related sounds. When we pronounce these sounds, our tongue should be inside. However, Viaan was not having a hold over his tongue, it would not go to the lower side of his jaw. His tongue would come out. We discussed this with his class teacher and requested that she give proper time to Viaan as he was lacking in confidence. We also went for therapy in the meanwhile. Viaan underwent therapy for a year. He has recovered 95% now. The teachers also gave him a lot of time and encouraged him a lot.

How has the experience of the online classes been for Viaan?

I was slightly anxious about the increased screen-time for the children due to the online classes. The children also watch television and play on mobile phones later in the day. So, we are looking forward to Viaan joining offline classes. But the good part is that, due to the online classes, we were able to spend more time with him. We could observe him while he was studying, observe his classes and take notes about his progress. We were able to notice and understand his speech articulation problem.
