Recently, Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri, hosted an English Debate Competition for students from Classes III and IV; the event brought a wave of energy, ideas, and articulate arguments to the school auditorium. It wasn’t just about winning or losing. The focus was on helping children find their voice, learn to express opinions, and build the courage to speak with clarity.
The topic chosen was a relevant one: Are field trips good for students? This sparked sharp viewpoints from both sides. Some speakers highlighted how field trips encourage learning beyond the classroom. Others raised valid concerns about safety, distractions, and time away from academics. The motion allowed for balanced arguments and opened space for reflective thinking.

Eight students, two each from the school’s four houses: Gautam, Kabir, Vivekananda, and Tagore, took the stage. Each child either spoke in favour of or against the topic. Their perspectives were clear, well-prepared, and thoughtfully delivered. It was clear that they had spent time understanding the subject, framing their views, and practising how to speak with confidence.
Judged with care and encouragement
The panel of judges included senior English teachers who looked at multiple factors. Content, fluency, confidence, and how the ideas were presented all played a role. There were moments of laughter, curiosity, and even silent nods from the audience. In the end, Priyada V from Gautam House secured first place; Ram from Kabir House came second, and the third place was shared between Pratyush and Kanishka, both from Class IV.

All participants received certificates of participation. The event was a platform for young learners to step forward, think on their feet, and listen to others. It also gave them a taste of how respectful disagreements can lead to new ideas.
The Principal congratulated all the participants. “The English Debate competition was inspiring. It was a delight to witness our young learners speak with such confidence and clarity. Field trips as a topic encouraged both creativity and reasoning. I congratulate all participants and urge them to keep developing their speaking skills and confidence through such meaningful engagements,” he said.

Events like these are not just about public speaking. They’re about nurturing curiosity, shaping independent thinkers, and giving students the tools to engage with the world.
