Google Launches Selfie Video Feature to Enhance Login Security and Recovery

Google has introduced a new selfie video verification feature that offers users an additional way to sign in to their accounts or recover access if they forget their passwords or lose access to their trusted devices. The feature is designed to simplify account recovery while adding another layer of protection against identity fraud.

With this new option, eligible Google Account users can record a short guided selfie video during the setup process. The recording requires users to perform simple head movements, allowing the system to capture their face from multiple angles. This reference video is then securely stored and used to verify future login or account recovery attempts.

When users need to recover their accounts, they can upload a new live selfie video. Google’s system compares the fresh recording with the previously saved video to confirm the user’s identity. To prevent misuse, the verification process also checks that the uploaded video is live, making it more difficult for fraudsters to use static images, pre-recorded clips, or AI-generated deepfakes.

The technology aims to improve account security while offering a convenient recovery method, particularly for users who no longer have access to their registered phone numbers, trusted devices, or recovery contacts. It complements existing security measures such as two-factor authentication and traditional recovery options rather than replacing them.

Recognising that facial verification raises privacy concerns, Google stated that the selfie video is stored only with the user’s permission. Users retain full control over their data and can delete the stored video at any time through their Google Account settings. According to the company, the recording will be used solely for authentication unless users explicitly choose to allow it for additional purposes.

The rollout reflects Google’s continued efforts to strengthen digital security as cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated. By incorporating advanced identity verification methods, the company hopes to make account recovery more secure while reducing the risk of impersonation and fraudulent access.

However, the introduction of biometric authentication is also likely to renew discussions around data privacy and the storage of sensitive personal information. Although Google has emphasised user consent and control, experts continue to stress the importance of robust safeguards when handling biometric data.

The selfie video verification feature is now available to eligible Google Account users and adds another option for securely accessing accounts in situations where conventional recovery methods may not be sufficient.
