A newspaper became a useful classroom resource for Class III students at Apeejay School, Saket. Through a carefully planned Newspaper Activity, they worked with a real article and learned how everyday reading can support several academic skills at once.

The activity focused on an article about India’s performance at the Commonwealth Games. Students read it carefully and answered questions based on the information presented. This required attention, patience, and a clear understanding of the text.

Reading with purpose

The exercise moved beyond simply reading the article from beginning to end. Students had to locate key facts and understand what the information meant. They also observed India’s achievements across different sports, which helped them examine the article closely.

Such reading tasks give children a clear purpose. Instead of treating a newspaper as something meant only for adults, they begin to see it as an accessible source of information. The activity also encouraged them to remain aware of current events through age-appropriate classroom work.

Connecting words with numbers

The lesson included a mathematical element as well. Students calculated the total number of medals won by India using the figures provided in the article. This helped them practise data interpretation within a real context.

The task showed how reading and mathematics can meet naturally in the classroom. Students needed comprehension to find the correct details and calculation skills to reach the answer. Each step depended on careful observation.

A meaningful classroom experience

Students participated with enthusiasm and completed the activity with keen interest. The newspaper format brought variety to the lesson and made the exercise engaging without moving away from its academic purpose.

The activity strengthened reading habits, comprehension, and analytical thinking. It also allowed students to practise mathematics through information drawn from a news report.
