Legal expertise, strategic insight and unwavering integrity have shaped Aman Deep Borthakur’s growing reputation in the corporate law landscape. An alumnus of Apeejay School, Nerul, from the batch of 2015, he has carved a niche for himself by helping companies navigate complex legal frameworks and achieve favourable business outcomes. His ability to combine sharp legal acumen with a results-driven approach has made him a credible and trusted name in the industry.

In this candid interaction, he reflects on his professional journey and shares how the strong academic grounding and value-based education at his alma mater laid the foundation for a career defined by excellence and integrity.

What are you doing professionally now?

I am working as a corporate lawyer in the Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) practice at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas in Mumbai. My work involves advising clients on complex corporate transactions, regulatory matters, and strategic business deals, while gaining valuable experience in one of India’s leading corporate law firms.

Why did you choose corporate law?

Right from law school, I had a deep interest in commercial laws and the considerations underlying how such laws are drafted. Building on this interest, I interned with a couple of corporate law firms and gained insight into transactional work. The nuances of company law and the process of making a transaction come together drove me to work at an M&A practice.

Share your favourite nostalgia from school.

Some of my favourite memories from the school days are the morning prayers that set a positive tone for the day and the lively games of football during the Games period. Playing on the sprawling school field with friends remains a special part of my school nostalgia and cherished childhood experiences.

How did your school nurture you holistically?

It gave me the foundational essentials to strive for excellence in whatever field I chose. The technical quality of education to compete with the very best and the moral foundation to preserve one’s integrity no matter the cost are key qualities I imbibed at my school, which I have continued to adhere to in my legal career.

Any advice for law aspirants?

I would suggest to law aspirants that they keep an open mind towards their career choices within the legal sphere and seek every opportunity, be it moot courts, internships or courses that come their way. You never know where your interest might lie, and it is always helpful to build perspective.

What are the recent career trends in corporate law?

One recent trend in corporate law as a career has been the diversity of backgrounds of new entrants to such a career, whether in terms of their law school, geographic location or school background. This has made it even more crucial to develop attributes and demonstrate experience and skills that set one apart from other applicants.

What would you like to say to present Apeejayites?

Focus on your essential courses while exploring co-curricular activities as well. I would urge you to take advantage of all the extracurricular activities at school that you would have the chance to participate in. It always helps to have diverse interests which you can build on later in life.
