The corridors of Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park were abuzz with activity on July 10, 2024, as it conducted yet another thrilling English Spellathon for students of Classes III to V. This competition is an annual ritual that focuses on spellings and vocabulary using English as the medium of communication between the participants, and it was amazing to see how excitedly young learners participate in this event. The event was not only to facilitate improvement in language but also to overcome stage fear and get self-confidence.

The foremost objective of the spellathon was to enhance students’ spelling and vocabulary skills. For the competition, students are provided with the list of words, which they had to learn and practice in prior. The competition had different levels of rounds, with each being tougher than the former. In one such instance it required the students to spell out letters, and in another pen it down on the board and also make use of the words in a sentence. Through this extensive manner, it ensured that the spellings were not only memorised but also comprehended their meaning and application.

Building Confidence and Public Speaking Skills

One of the great gains of the spellathon was the confidence it built-in students. It took great nerve and composure to stand before peers and teachers to spell out words and explain their usage. The event, therefore, was a celebration of the linguistic prowess of a student and emerging victorious over the fear of the stage. The supportive milieu of the cheers of the audience further motivated the participants to do their best.

The spellathon this year had an added feature: A definitive ability to surprise and challenge. There were two surprise words in the final round of the competition, words that were not in the distributed list given to the students. More than anything, this posed a test to the semblance of last-minute presence of mind and applicability of language to the participants. They added a great deal of excitement to a contest that was already thrilling.

Celebrate the Winners

Announcing the winners was the limelight of the morning. Performers of the best order from each class were given away with badges by the respective class teachers. These were given to them as a mark of honour for their outstanding results in their relentless pursuit of better language usage. The winners wore the badge with extreme pride that symbolized their dedication and resultant success in working hard.

In all, the English Spellathon held at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park sang a success song. It provided the students not only with the spelling skills required but also with vocabulary skills and boosted the morale and communication qualities by making the students speak boldly. The inclusion of surprise words added an element of excitement and challenge, making the competition even more engaging.

The event was a good testimony of the commitment given by the school to the provision of holistic teaching and the inculcation of love for learning the languages among the students. Badges obtained by the winners would remind them of their achievements and consequently encourage others to earn the same ones in the upcoming contests.
