Dice and stairs turn Mathematics into an engaging lesson

Mathematics becomes easier for young children when they can work with numbers practically. With this approach, Apeejay School, Saket, organised two interactive activities for the students of Class I. The exercises focused on subtraction and number sequencing, allowing the children to learn through participation and movement.

Both activities presented familiar mathematical concepts in a simple and enjoyable form. The students did not merely solve questions on paper. They worked with dice, moved along numbered stairs and took an active part in understanding how numbers function.

Learning subtraction with roll and subtract

The students explored subtraction through the Roll and Subtract activity. Working in pairs, they rolled the dice and practised taking away numbers. They then used the numbers to solve simple subtraction sentences.

The activity gave the children an opportunity to practise subtraction through a clear process. Rolling the dice added an element of interest, while pair work kept the students involved.

By connecting the operation with an activity, subtraction became easier to follow. The exercise made classroom learning interactive, enjoyable and meaningful for the young learners.

Understanding number order through the stairs

The Stair Activity was conducted to reinforce ascending and descending order. Numbers were written on the steps, allowing the students to observe the sequence as they moved.

To understand ascending order, the children walked up the stairs from the smallest number to the largest. They then moved down from the biggest number to the smallest to practise descending order.

The activity turned number ordering into a learning experience that the students could see and perform. Moving step by step made the difference between ascending and descending order easier to understand.

Together, the two activities gave the children an engaging way to practise essential mathematical concepts.
