‘Success, to me, means creating opportunities for others’

This alumnus’ journey has never followed a predictable path. From aspiring to become an engineer during his school years at Apeejay School, Noida, to building a career in hospitality, entrepreneurship, and law, his professional life reflects curiosity and adaptability. Today, as the Director and CEO of Clarissa Group and a Supreme Court advocate, he brings together business acumen, strategic thinking, and people-centric leadership. Meet Harshal Dilwali.

In this conversation, he reflects on his school memories and leadership lessons learnt.

You have explored diverse fields. How did that journey happen?

My journey started from school itself. I had always aspired to become an engineer, so I took PCM in school. But things changed suddenly when my parents entered the hospitality sector. That pushed me towards hotel management.

How did you become an advocate? How has law influenced the decisions you take?

Law happened quite accidentally in my life. After completing my BSc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration, I pursued my MBA. During the lockdown period, I decided to study law as well because I felt it would give me a better perspective on how to run a company. Becoming a Supreme Court advocate has taught me discipline, strategic thinking, and the importance of listening before making decisions. These qualities have helped me lead businesses with much more clarity and balance.

What does success mean to you?

It means creating opportunities for others, building meaningful brands, and leaving behind a legacy that inspires people beyond business itself. I have learnt that sustainable growth is not always outward. Sometimes it is inward. It comes through patience and self-awareness. Because of that understanding, my definition of success has changed completely over the years.

What values from school do you still carry with you today?

It has taught me confidence, discipline, and the importance of respecting myself while treating others with humility, no matter how far I grow in life. Those values have stayed with me and continue to guide me even today.

What are some memories from school that still stay with you?

My school years gave me some of my most cherished memories. What stayed with me most was the strong bond I shared with my teachers and their continued affection even years after graduation. Representing the school as captain of the cricket team at state and national levels and serving as vice-head boy were deeply rewarding experiences. Beyond academics and sports, being part of the school band and theatre group shaped my confidence, broadened my outlook, and quietly prepared me for the journey ahead.

What advice would you give to Apeejayites today?

Teachers play a crucial role in shaping and guiding students. During my school years, there was far more freedom and far less academic pressure, which allowed me to explore different interests. I actively participated in theatre, sports, and Inter-house activities, all of which helped shape my personality. I believe students should never limit themselves only to academics or sports. Real growth comes from maintaining a healthy balance between studies, extracurricular activities, and personal development.

Has interacting with audiences changed your perspective as a public speaker?

Public speaking has changed me significantly over the years. Interestingly, I struggled with stage fear during my school days and only became comfortable speaking publicly later in life. Today, I see it as a two-way learning process. Interacting with students, founders, and audiences from different backgrounds has made me more open-minded, grounded, and thoughtful, both personally and professionally.
