Students at Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA) in Jalandhar, embarked on a creative journey as they delved into the world of home decor with waste material. Organised by the Department of Interior Design as skill enhancement classes for 12th standard students, the ‘Home Decor with Waste Material’ sessions aimed to foster creativity, resourcefulness, and environmental consciousness among the participants.

Led by Ms. Rajni Kumar and Ms. Harshita Arora, faculty members of the Interiors department, the classes provided students with hands-on experience in repurposing waste materials to craft decorative items. From pots made with jute and clay to innovative lamps and wall hangings created with bamboo sticks, cardboard, and jute, students explored various techniques to transform ordinary materials into aesthetically pleasing decor pieces.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the initiative, Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra emphasised the significance of such classes in promoting sustainable practices and artistic expression. She highlighted how these sessions not only instill valuable skills in students but also contribute to environmental conservation by reducing waste accumulation. Dr. Dhingra underscored the importance of utilising resources creatively and making a positive impact on both homes and the environment.

Throughout the classes, students were encouraged to think innovatively and design items in line with specific themes. Their creative endeavors ranged from functional pieces to decorative accents, reflecting their newfound knowledge and artistic flair. By reimagining waste materials as elements of decor, students discovered the potential for beauty and utility in everyday objects.

Reflecting on their experiences, the students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to explore their creativity and learn practical skills. Many noted how the classes had expanded their perspective on sustainability and inspired them to adopt more eco-friendly practices in their lives. They shared their excitement at discovering the artistic possibilities inherent in waste materials and expressed eagerness to continue exploring such avenues in the future.

The success of the ‘Home Decor with Waste Material’ classes underscores Apeejay College of Fine Arts’ commitment to holistic education and sustainable living. By equipping students with the skills and knowledge to repurpose waste materials creatively, the college empowers them to become agents of positive change in their communities and stewards of the environment.

As the classes concluded, students left with not only newfound skills but also a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of creativity and resourcefulness.
