Recently, Class III students of Apeejay School, Model Town, embarked on an immersive and joyful learning experience under the topic Plants Around Us-The Leaf.’The activity was designed to help children explore the wonders of nature through observation, creativity, and scientific thinking.

To begin with, the young learners set out on a nature walk within the school campus. With keen curiosity, they carefully collected only fallen leaves, a thoughtful gesture that reflected their love and respect for the environment. This mindful act became the first lesson of the day: that learning and caring for nature go hand in hand.

Back in class, the students examined the leaves closely. They observed the shape, size, texture, and intricate vein patterns on each leaf. Teachers guided them to understand the function of the leaf blade and veins, and how these parts help transport nutrients and water throughout the plant. The children were fascinated to learn that each leaf, though unique, plays a vital role in keeping the plant alive and healthy.

Taking their exploration further, students engaged in a creative art-science integration activity. They made leaf rubbings by placing leaves under sheets of paper and gently rubbing crayons over them. The colourful imprints revealed detailed patterns, helping children appreciate the beauty and structure of each leaf.

The highlight of the session was a simple yet powerful comparison that students observed how the veins in leaves resemble the veins in human hands. This discovery sparked delightful conversations about how both plants and humans depend on complex inner networks for survival. It was a moment of wonder that bridged science and self-awareness, fostering empathy for all living things.

Through this experiential learning activity, children developed scientific observation skills, environmental sensitivity, and a deeper understanding of plant anatomy. They learned to connect classroom concepts with real-world experiences, fostering curiosity, creativity, and respect for nature. Science, for these young minds, truly came alive — through touch, discovery, and imagination!
