UGC announces new norms for undergraduate courses

University Grants Commission (UGC) has released new directives for undergraduate degrees. According to it, students will now have to study for four years, not three, in order to attain a UG ‘honours’ degree.

The body has also declared a curriculum and credit framework for the UG programmes which will provide an innovative and flexible higher education system for students. Additionally, all the higher educational institutes have been advised to take necessary measures to adapt to the curriculum.

Some key highlights are: More focus on holistic and multidisciplinary undergraduate education, Flexible curricular structure, Multiple entry-exit allowed and re-entry options, UG certificate after completing 1 year (2 semesters), UG Diploma after 2 years (4 semesters), amongst others.
