The power of mentorship 

The placement process can be a stressful and uncertain time for college students. With intense competition, evolving industry demands, and limited experience, many students find themselves overwhelmed. This is where mentors play a critical role. A good mentor acts as a guide, advisor, and motivator—offering support that goes far beyond academics. As emphasised by Payal Tiwari, an alumna of Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication, “Our director sir is a truly charismatic leader. His one-on-one interactions, especially his advice on being prepared for both the best and worst, gave me strength when I needed it most.” 

She further added, “I still remember when I was feeling low after a rejection, and one of the faculty members said, “Bhale exams mein fail ho jao, life mein fail nahi hona chahiye.” And then he showed his belief in me saying, “You’ll be going to Burson.” Cut to today—I’ve received a job offer from Burson, the agency I always dreamed of being part of.”

Payal also added, “The faculty at AIMC have been the backbone of my journey. I got to learn practical industry insights into the classroom. The faculty also emphasised on real-world learning that made me feel more industry-ready. Additionally, consistent support, encouragement, and belief in my potential by the faculty members gave me the confidence to pursue my dream role. Whether it was late-night doubts or last-minute prep, they were always just a message away.”

It is undoubtedly true that one of the most important roles a mentor plays is helping students make informed career decisions. Many students are unsure about which path to take—whether it’s choosing between different job profiles, industries, or even further studies. A mentor, with their industry knowledge and personal experience, can help students understand what to expect from each option and align those choices with their strengths and interests.

Moreover, mentors often provide constructive feedback on resumes, helping students highlight relevant skills, organise content clearly, and avoid common mistakes. They can also conduct mock interviews, helping students improve their responses, body language, and confidence. These practical tips can significantly improve a student’s chances of clearing the selection process.

They also have extensive professional networks and can introduce students to industry professionals, alumni, and hiring managers, opening doors that students might not access on their own. This exposure can lead to internship offers, job leads, or even direct placement referrals.

Mentorship is a powerful tool in the placement process. Whether through career guidance, interview practice, or emotional encouragement, mentors help students transition from campus to corporate life with greater confidence and clarity. In today’s competitive job market, having a mentor is not just helpful—it’s a smart strategy for success.
