On July 19, 2024, Apeejay School, Noida, broke the conventional barriers of verbal communication with its much-awaited Inter-house Mime Competition. This program brought to the forefront the innovative creativity, smooth teamwork, and fluent non-verbal communication acumen of its students while raising an art form often lost in the shuffle of more vocal performances.

The atmosphere was electric as the auditorium filled with people very slowly indeed. The two comperes struck a warm, mellow note as they introduced the sombre art of mime — a great and powerful medium for expressing ideas and feelings without speaking a word. It was well-organised with three categories, making the competition inclusive for students of classes VI to VIII where children were asked to express themes of considerable social concern through mime:
Voices Against Bullying: The children of Class VI took up the cause of ‘Anti-bullying’ enthusiastically. It wasn’t an act; it was a strong statement against bullying.
Champions of Conservation: The class VII students put up an act on the very relevant topic of conservation of the environment.

Poetic Gestures: Class VIII performances were based on ‘Lyrical poems’. Their acts were rich in social commentary and beautifully executed to show how poetry can be powerfully conveyed even in utter silence.
The Vice-principal, Ms Amrita Hajela, who also pricked the talents, applauded the children for their artistic dedication and brilliant zeal. This competition brought out the mighty preparation and spirited commitment of each house which was reflected in the results:
Category 1, (Class VI): Nehru House took the top spot, followed by Tagore and R.K. House. Gandhi House occupied the third position.
Category 2, (Class VII): Top honours were grabbed by Gandhi House. A close competition was given by R.K. House and Nehru House.
Category 3: Class VIII: Tagore House stood first, closely followed by Gandhi House and R.K. House.

The Inter-house Mime Competition not only showcased the talent of Apeejay students but also inculcated the spirit of teamwork and pride for the house. It celebrated art in pure fervour, where silent expressions made deafening sounds through their emotions, which had a lasting impact on every viewer’s mind.
The event, therefore, did not only present the artistic ability of the students at this school but also brought out aspects that dealt with empathy and understanding through body expression. Every piece so well conceptualized and brilliantly executed, presented students who could express complex emotions and narration without speech.
