Human values provide a strong foundation for students, helping them develop essential life skills and qualities that are highly prized in the professional world. Values like honesty, integrity, and empathy help shape a student’s character. These qualities are admired in the professional world too. As they build trust and credibility. Employers value individuals who exhibit strong character because they are more likely to be dependable and ethical in their work.
These values not only guide students in making ethical decisions but also enable them to build meaningful relationships, contribute positively to their workplace, and achieve long-term success in their careers. Therefore, for students like Utkarsh Tiwari, a class XI student at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park living these values has become a way of life.
In a candid interview the Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values awardee talks about who is his inspiration and the role the school has played in inculcating values.
How would you describe your journey at Apeejay?
It has been amazing. I joined the Panchsheel Park branch when I was in the nursery, and today, I am in class XI; it was been a good 12-13 years now. There are bound to have been some ups and downs. Till class VIII, I was never concerned about my studies. But all this changed when I came to class X. The two years that I spent studying online due to COVID-19 was a wake-up call for me. IN class X, I got good marks which was a relief.
What role have your friends played in your life?
I would say that friends are a big part of your life. There comes a time when you don’t give much credence to what your parents say and give in to what peers say. My friends used to get good marks and I aspired to be like them. I knew I would have to get down to hard work and that is what I did.
What are some of the human values that guide you?
I feel that your peers shape how you think and act. Human values to me mean a person who is determined to work towards the betterment of society. He/she is a person who is aware of the duties and follows them with a positive attitude. These values have impacted my journey. When I came to class X, I knew I would have to pull up my socks. The good part was that everyone, including the teachers, appreciated the new me who was more focused in class.
What role have your parents and school played in instilling these values?
Parents always play a big role when it comes to instilling values in you; it starts when you are a toddler. I come from a religious family and have been exposed to Indian culture and traditions. Of course, the school has been a major influencer. The teachers have been extremely supportive all through. The best part is that my teachers had faith in me to do better and that helped me a lot. I understand that I had a responsibility towards them as well since they have put their might behind me.

What was your reaction when you were given this award?
Two of my friends had won this award before. So, I was normal when I was told that I was to get the award. This is because the three other students who took the test with me were just as good; they were my friends. Of course, I was happy when I finally held the certificate and the award. But I felt that they were just as deserving. But I am content.
How important is the award for you?
It is important and I want to thank the school for having faith in me and giving me this prestigious award. The award is important since it tells me that the school and everyone around me have noticed the changes that have come in my life. My parents are just as grateful that I have been conferred with this award.
Who or what inspires you?
It has to be my father without a doubt. My father came from a small village and today, here I am studying at one of the well-known schools in Delhi. This is all because of him. I owe everything to him. He is my role model.
