In an increasingly interconnected world, values like global awareness and cultural sensitivity are essential for students to understand and appreciate diverse perspectives and cultures. These values help promote a sense of global citizenship and cooperation. Human values play a crucial role in the personal and academic development of students.

Developing human values in students prepares them for the challenges and responsibilities of adulthood. It equips them with the skills and mindset needed to be responsible citizens and contribute positively to society. Meet one such student – Rajashree Basak, who studies at Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri.

In a candid interview, the student talks about how she balances human values with her personal life and academic goals.

What was your reaction when you finally received the award?

When I learnt that I was the one receiving the award from the middle school, I felt deeply honoured. This award is given to those who have demonstrated outstanding behaviour in their past years. The fact that the school recognised this is a matter of pride and honour for me.

What inspires you most from Dr Stya Paul’s life?

His entire life’s journey is truly inspiring. But the one thing that stands out for me that is his unwavering dedication and determination.

How would you define being human?

Being human, to me, is all about upholding important values such as showing respect to elders and embracing a strong work ethic.

How do you balance these human values with your personal life and academic goals?

In my personal life, I prioritise my words and interactions, ensuring that I speak respectfully, especially when speaking to teachers or the principal. In my academic life, I maintain my reputation through my behaviour and my work.

Tell us a bit about yourself. I understand you enjoy playing music.

I love playing music. Music has a calming effect on me, especially during stressful times at school. It relaxes my mind and provides a sense of relief. I primarily play the flute and also sing. I used to take classes, but a few months ago, I decided to practice singing on my own to see how I could improve.

What role have your parents and teachers played in your achievement of this award?

My parents have always emphasised important values like respect for elders and hard work. They’ve guided me on how to stay focused and disciplined in my life. My teachers, throughout my education, have taught me the importance of discipline and how to manage my time effectively.

In today’s world, which can often be selfish, what challenges have you faced while following these values?

The challenges I’ve faced are mostly related to competitions where judges sometimes show favouritism, which is disheartening. It can be frustrating when people do not judge fairly, it’s a challenge I’ve encountered.

Why do you think human values are so crucial for students?

Human values should be instilled not only in students but in everyone. These values are not limited to our school or college years; they support us throughout our lives. They help us navigate life’s challenges and build character.
