Events like art exhibitions in schools are an act of self-expression for the students and a step toward unorthodox learning. Therefore, schools like Apeejay School, Pitampura, let the students express themselves through the Annual Exhibition 2024, themed India-A Tapestry of Vibrant Cultures. Such events not only boost self-confidence among students but bring to its fold an appreciation for the varied ways of cultural expression and education toward holistic development along with creativity.

Meet one such student Aarav Gupta, of class VII at the school who exhibited his talent and creativity on the canvas. In an impromptu conversation, he shared how the COVID-19 pandemic sparked his interest in art.
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Aarav and I am in class VII. I am interested in both Science and arts. And while I am not sure what I would like to pursue as a career, at present I am enjoying school life and my art.
How and why did you participate in the annual exhibition?

When the COVID-19 lockdown happened, I decided to take up a hobby. Art ignited my curiosity and my passion for this art form began. In the last few years, I have drawn and coloured several drawings. When I came to know about the exhibition in the school, I decided to showcase my abilities.
What is your preferred style?
As such I don’t have a typical style. I like to draw portraits and mostly use pencils and colour pencils for shading. I also use paint but sometimes. For the exhibition in the school, I put up two or three paints – one was of a bird sitting on a cherry tree and another was of a lady reading a book.
I also typically draw from references provided in his art classes, such as reference sheets, which help me to create better drawings. While I don’t have specific colours that I always use, I like to use a dark background with some bright colours in the middle to make the artwork look attractive.
Have you taken classes to learn art?
Yes, but are only during the summer vacations. It is not possible when you have regular school. Painting takes time, there have been times when one artwork has taken more than a month. Hence, once the school opens, I draw in my free time only or during art classes in the school. However, once I start on a drawing I try to complete it at the earliest.

How much time did it take to draw the two paintings for the exhibition?
I had already drawn the two paintings earlier; this made it easy for me to put them up for the exhibition. When I came to know about the exhibition I was encouraged to showcase my talent.
How did you feel when you put up your artwork?
It was such a proud moment for me. I felt happy that so many people were able to see my work. It was the first time that I was putting up my paintings in an exhibition. However, I do usually participate in other events like the Annual Appreciation Day.
