Google has unveiled a comprehensive prompt engineering playbook aimed at helping users maximise the effectiveness of large language models (LLMs), like Gemini. The 68-page whitepaper, authored by Google software engineer Lee Boonstra, provides detailed guidance for writing better prompts, particularly within the Vertex AI sandbox or through the Gemini developer API.
Prompt engineering — the art of crafting effective instructions for AI models—has become an essential skill in the era of generative AI. Google explains that while LLMs are trained on vast data and can predict text responses, clear, structured prompts are crucial for optimal results.
The playbook outlines 10 key strategies:
Google’s guidance reinforces the growing importance of prompt engineering as AI tools become more embedded in workflows. Mastering these techniques can significantly enhance the performance and reliability of LLM-powered applications.
