Recently, Apeejay School, Saket, introduced its Class I students to two essential aspects of early learning: understanding the world through newspapers and building independence through simple daily tasks. The activity formed part of the school’s effort to combine academic exposure with practical life skills from an early stage.
For many students, this was their first interaction with a printed newspaper. They began by identifying the day and date, locating New Delhi on the page, and observing how information is organised. Teachers guided them through the structure, helping them notice headings, sections, and page numbers.
By the end of the session, students had counted all six pages and developed a basic sense of how news is presented, while also beginning to connect printed information with everyday life.
The exercise aimed to familiarise young learners with real-world information in a simple and accessible way. It also encouraged observation and curiosity, helping them engage with their surroundings beyond the classroom, and slowly build confidence in understanding how the world around them is documented and shared.

Alongside this, students practised folding aprons and table mats. The activity focused on coordination, neatness, and responsibility. Teachers supported them step by step, ensuring that each child understood the process and could repeat it independently.
This combination of reading and hands-on practice reflects a broader approach to early education, where learning extends beyond textbooks. What this really means is that children begin to see everyday tasks and information as part of their learning journey.
As these students move forward, such experiences are likely to shape both their confidence and their awareness, laying a steady foundation for more complex skills in the years ahead.
