‘My career trajectory was greatly influenced by the support I received from the teachers of this school’

Dr Priyanka Singh, a highly experienced eye surgeon with 12 years of expertise in her field, has established her clinic — Neytra Eye Centre, Saket. After graduating from Apeejay School, Saket, Dr. Singh embarked on her journey in medicine, eventually specialising in ophthalmology. Before founding her clinic, she served as the head of the department at a Medical College and gained valuable experience at a subdivision hospital.

Despite starting her venture just three years back, Dr Singh has already made a significant impact, providing essential eye care services and restoring vision for numerous patients. In a candid interview, she talks about her school life among other things.

Tell us about yourself.

In 2004, after completing her class XII at Apeejay School, I pursued MBBS. My rank in the school (top 10 in my class) encouraged me to choose Vardhman Mahavir Medical College for my medical education.

Is this what you always wanted to become?

Yes. Since my father is a professor and doctor, he asked me in class VIII what I wanted to become. Without hesitation, I expressed my desire to follow in his footsteps and become a doctor, specifically a surgeon. My career aspirations have always been clear and focused.

So did your father motivate you to become a doctor?

Yes. My father indirectly motivated me by simply asking what I wanted to become. When I expressed my desire to be a doctor like him, he reassured me that I could achieve it. His support made my career path feel clear and achievable, yet here I am.

Do you find working a job or owning your clinic more convenient for you?

As of now, I am unable to decide between working in a job or owning my clinic as I started my my clinic a few years back. While it takes time for a private business to grow, I find satisfaction in being independent and not working under someone else’s title. Specialising in my field is fulfilling, and being my boss brings me happiness.

How did Apeejay help you to attain your goals?

The support and guidance from various sources, including family, friends, schools, and teachers, have been instrumental in shaping my career. While I ultimately make my own decisions, their input is invaluable and helps me streamline my career path. As the saying goes: It takes a village to raise a dragon; the collective effort involved in achieving success, the school stood as a great support for me.

Anything that you appreciate the most about your school?

They consistently supported my involvement in extracurricular activities, providing platforms like annual day functions and encouraging me to participate in arts, craft, and public speaking. Their efforts broadened my options and nurtured my diverse interests. Moreover, the teachers of this school are fabulous!

Any piece of advice for current Apeejayites of aspiring doctors?

As an alumnus, I would advise students to approach Math and Science as real-life scenarios, focusing on understanding rather than rote learning. Setting clear goals, both short-term and long-term, is essential for success. Study consistently, avoid last-minute cramming, and prioritise self-care for optimal performance.

As a doctor, I would suggest you take breaks, stay hydrated, and go for walks which is very crucial for mental well-being amidst high competition and stress. Parents and students should manage expectations lightly and prioritise making meaningful memories alongside academic pursuits
