The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is one of India’s most competitive and prestigious exams for aspiring engineers. Serving as a gateway to top institutes like the IITs and NITs, it demands a strong academic grounding, strategic preparation, and unwavering focus. With a vast syllabus and fierce competition, lakhs of students begin their JEE journey early, balancing school studies with dedicated self-preparation to secure a future in science and technology.

Meet one such student — Ashwika Tandon of Class XII at Apeejay School, Noida. In a candid interview, she shares her career goals.

Did you have any specific academic goals?

Yes, while scoring well in school exams is important, my primary goal has been preparing for the JEE. Furthermore, as of now, I want to do my BTech in India. Thereafter, I might go for an MTech or an MBA abroad.

What course are you aiming to pursue in the future?

I plan to go into engineering, specifically in Computer Science (CSE). Engineering has always been my dream. I’ve seen my father, who works in the telecom industry, go to the office every day, work hard, and face corporate challenges. That inspired me. Also, I’m fascinated by AI and technological advancements — they are shaping the future.

How has your father helped guide you on this path?

He has been very supportive. He always asks me to analyse my tests, and we sit together to figure out the mistakes and how I can improve. His practical advice and experience have been a huge help.

Do you think having a specific mindset is important for working in such industries?

Absolutely. It’s not just about doing a job. Whatever you work on should be for the betterment of others and not harm the environment. Purpose matters. However, I don’t see myself in a government setup. I would prefer to work in an MNC.

What advice would you give to those wanting to pursue BTech?

I’d say they should follow their interests. If someone genuinely likes Math or Science, they should explore fields like CS or engineering. Don’t do it just for the sake of it — do it because you love it.

How did you manage your time with school studies and JEE preparation?

A: My main goal has always been JEE, but I also knew that board results are important, especially for college admissions. So I worked on time management, balancing both schoolwork and entrance exam preparation.

Role of time management.

Time management is crucial, whether it is the Board exams or taking the JEE. It helps you stay on top of both school and competitive exams.
