Pattern recognition is the cognitive process of identifying regularities, structures, or trends in data, objects, or events. It enables humans and machines to make sense of complex information by detecting similarities, differences, and underlying relationships. From distinguishing faces in a crowd to predicting trends in stock markets, pattern recognition forms the foundation of learning, decision-making, and problem-solving.
The study of pattern recognition has roots in psychology, neuroscience, and computer science. Psychologists first explored it as a fundamental aspect of human perception — how the brain identifies shapes, colours, sounds, or sequences.
