Buying a laptop can be a daunting task, especially if you are buying it for the first time. There are so many options in the market that making an informed decision can prove to be a Herculean task. What is worse is that the more you ask people, the more you get confused. Buying a laptop for your child is an important decision that requires careful consideration.
According to Rajni Virmani, a PRT at Apeejay Svran Global School in Faridabad, Sector 21-D, there are several key points that parents should keep in mind while buying a laptop for their child. “First, consider the primary purpose of the laptop. Is it for educational purposes, gaming, creative work, or a combination of these? Also, consider the child’s age and whether they will need the laptop for several years. Second, determine your budget beforehand. Third, choose between Windows, macOS, or Linux based on the child’s needs and familiarity with the operating system. Fourth, look for features like a fingerprint reader or facial recognition for added security. Also, consider installing antivirus software to protect against online threats,” Virmani advised.
She said that there are other things to consider as well. Consider the size and weight of the laptop. A smaller and lightweight laptop is more portable but may have a smaller screen and less powerful hardware. “The laptop’s performance depends on its processor, RAM, and storage. Ensure it has enough power to handle the tasks a child needs, such as running educational software. Look for a laptop with good battery life. Check the laptop’s ports and connectivity options. Make sure it has enough USB ports, HDMI, and Wi-Fi capabilities for a child’s needs. Decide between a traditional hard drive (HDD) and a solid-state drive (SSD). SSDs are faster and more reliable but can be more expensive for larger storage capacities. If your child is into gaming or graphic-intensive tasks, consider a laptop with a dedicated graphics card for better performance,” she pointed out.
What operating system should the laptop have?
The choice of operating system, RAM, storage, and configuration of the laptop will depend on your child’s specific needs and intended use. Following are some of the considerations:
· RAM: For basic tasks like web browsing and word processing, 4GB of RAM should suffice.
· For more demanding applications or multitasking, consider 8GB or 16GB of RAM.

· Storage: HDD (Hard Disk Drive): Provides more storage space at a lower cost but is slower. SSD (Solid State Drive): Faster and more reliable than HDDs. They improve overall system performance and are preferable for most use cases. A 128GB or 256GB SSD is usually sufficient for basic needs, but consider higher capacity if needed.
· Processor and configuration: CPU: For general use, an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processor should be adequate. For more demanding tasks, consider a Core i5/i7 or Ryzen 5/7.
· Graphics: Integrated graphics should be fine for basic tasks. For gaming or graphic-intensive work, a laptop with dedicated graphics (e.g., NVIDIA or AMD Radeon) is necessary.
Features that each laptop must have
There are several important features and specifications that we should consider to ensure that the device meets our needs. Some key features that every laptop should have:
1. The processor is the laptop’s brain. Opt for a CPU that matches our computing needs.

2. The display quality matters for visual comfort. Consider an IPS or OLED panel for better color accuracy and wider viewing angles.
3. Depending on our usage, aim for at least eight hours of battery life for on-the-go convenience.
4. Consider the laptop’s size and weight, especially if we need to carry it often.
5. A durable and well-built laptop is essential for long-term use.
6. Ensure the laptop has the necessary ports and wireless connectivity options (USB, HDMI, Wi-Fi, bluetooth).
7. With the increasing importance of video conferencing, having a decent webcam and microphone is essential for virtual meetings and online classes.
8. Some laptops allow you to upgrade components like RAM and storage.
Virmani said that having a clear understanding will help parents and students make an informed decision when purchasing a laptop. “Whether a parent should buy a higher configuration laptop for a student pursuing a profession in computers depends on several factors, including the specific field within computers and the student’s immediate needs and budget constraints. For instance, if the student wants to pursue Computer Science, the field may require a laptop capable of running development environments, coding software, and virtual machines. A higher-end configuration could be beneficial,” Virmani said.
Here are some more aspects to look at

Graphic Design or Video Editing: These fields often require powerful laptops with dedicated graphics cards and ample RAM.
Gaming: If the student’s profession involves game development or testing, a gaming laptop with a strong GPU might be necessary.
Future-Proofing: Investing in a higher-end laptop can provide better performance and longevity, reducing the need for an upgrade in the near future. This can be cost-effective in the long run.
Upgradability: Some laptops allow for component upgrades (e.g., RAM or storage). If budget constraints exist, we can opt for a laptop with the potential for future upgrades.
Consider Alternatives: In some cases, it might be more cost-effective to invest in a desktop computer with high performance and a lower-cost laptop for portability.
Institute’s Requirements: Check if the student’s educational institution has specific laptop requirements or recommendations. Some institutions may provide guidelines for hardware configurations.

Future Needs: Consider the likelihood of the student’s needs changing over time. If the student expects to engage in more resource-intensive tasks, a higher configuration laptop might be wise.
Software Requirements: Ensure that the laptop can run the required software for the student’s profession. Some specialised software demands more powerful hardware.
Warranty and Support: Higher-end laptops often come with better warranties and customer support, which can be valuable for long-term use.
