Smita Sharma, Head of Social Science Department, at Apeejay School, Pitampura has been teaching for more than two decades. She joined the school in 2000, when she was just 26 years old. Having spent over two decades teaching at this school means that the school has become a second home for her.

“I was very young when I joined Apeejay School, Pitampura; it was my first job. Read excerpts from the interview to know about her professional journey:

How has your journey been thus far?

It has been an amazing journey for me so far! I love my profession as I am able to share my knowledge and help others learn new things. It’s very rewarding to see my students grow and succeed.

Why did you become a teacher?

Nothing encourages you to continue to learn more about a topic than when you’re teaching it! Children are inquisitive and often ask questions you’d never thought of. This allows you to constantly research new topics and technologies to introduce to your students.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being a teacher?

For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a teacher is seeing my students succeed and achieve their goals. It’s amazing to see them grow and learn new things as well as to know that I played a part in their success. Also, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of knowing that you’ve made a positive impact on someone’s life. I feel young at heart by remaining in the company of young students, who keep me updated with the latest Gen Z trends.

How and why did you choose Apeejay?

Apeejay School had great brand value and I chose to be here due to its reputation for academic excellence and a strong commitment to student success. Additionally, teachers are drawn to this school as it primarily focuses on holistic education, which emphasises the importance of developing students’ social, emotional, and physical well-being, in addition to their academic skills.

How important is it for teachers to be learners as well?

It is incredibly important for teachers to be learners as well. Being a lifelong learner is one of the most important qualities that a teacher can have. As educators, we are responsible for helping our students develop a love for learning, and the skills they need to be successful in life. However, we can only do this if we are constantly learning and growing. By continuing to learn and expand our knowledge, we can stay up-to-date with the latest teaching methods and technologies as well as we can model the importance of lifelong learning for our students. Plus, learning new things can be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling, both personally and professionally.

How do you motivate students to perform better?

Motivating students to perform better can be a challenge, but several strategies can be effective. First, set clear expectations and goals for students, and then provide them with the support and resources they need to achieve those goals. It’s also important to make learning engaging and relevant to students’ lives, by incorporating hands-on activities, real-world examples, and opportunities for student choice and creativity.

Second, praising students for their efforts and accomplishments can also be a powerful motivator. It’s therefore important to provide constructive feedback and help students see the progress they are making. Finally, building a positive relationship with students and creating a supportive classroom environment can help them feel valued and motivated to succeed. Give examples of the alumni who have brought laurels to the institute.

What is Apeejay’s teaching philosophy?

Its teaching philosophy emphasises the importance of providing a well-rounded education that focuses on developing students’ intellectual, social, emotional, and physical well-being. The school aims to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that encourages students to take risks, think critically, and pursue their passions. Apeejay also places a strong emphasis on character education, with a focus on developing students’ values, ethics, and social responsibility.

Additionally, the school also fosters creativity, innovation and encourages students to be active participants in their learning. My gratitude to our Founder-Chairman Sir Dr Stya Paul, President Ma’am Mrs Sushma Paul Berlia, and respected principal ma’am. My sincere gratitude to all of them for their support and guidance. Their leadership has been invaluable to me, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have you all. Their encouragement and feedback have helped me grow both personally and professionally.

What are the traits that students want in a teacher?

Students often value teachers who are knowledgeable, passionate, and caring. They appreciate teachers who are enthusiastic about their subject matter, and who can make learning engaging and relevant to their lives.

Second, students appreciate teachers who are patient, understanding, and approachable, and who are willing to take the time to provide individualised support and feedback. Three, students want teachers who are fair, consistent, and respectful, and who create a positive and inclusive learning environment. Last, students appreciate teachers who are willing to listen to their ideas and concerns, and who are committed to helping them achieve their goals.
