Individuals with a strong foundation in human values are often better equipped to navigate the complexities of life and work. These values contribute to long-term success and fulfillment, both personally and professionally. Human values contribute to the development of essential life skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making. These skills are valuable for success in various aspects of life, including academics, career, and personal relationships.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Apeejay Education which believes in the holistic development of its students gives away Dr Stya Paul Award for Human Values each year to students who exhibit honesty and integrity. Meet one such student – Saima Bhalla of class XII at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park

In a candid interview, the recipient of the prestigious award defines what being human means.

I’m pursuing Humanities, and I’m considering English Honours or Mass Communication. I aspire to work in public relations. What I like about this field is that you get to learn and gain knowledge about so many things. Today, knowledge about the world is crucial, and the ability to manage a client’s reputation with the public is important. I want to influence a larger audience positively. I also love to read books.

I prefer reading fictional books, especially old literature, classics, and a bit of mythology and historical fiction. I also write as a hobby, mostly poetry, and I’m working on some short stories. I have contributed a few of my writing to the Apeejay Newsroom.

To be honest, after the interview, I didn’t think it went well. So, I wasn’t expecting the award. But on Founder’s Day, when I found out, it was a really good feeling. Also, I was nominated for this coveted award when I was in class XI but didn’t qualify for the interview. So, when I was nominated again, this year, I was not expecting to get it. After the interview, I felt I could have answered some questions better. Looking back, I thought it could have gone better, but overall, it turned out well.

I’ve been through the process before, so it wasn’t as scary this time. I was a bit nervous, but I cleared the test and got to the interview, and it went well.

For me, being human is about kindness. Everyone has inner beauty, and I believe it’s important to focus on a person’s values rather than just their outer appearance. This belief is reflected in my poems.

I believe the values we uphold bring happiness, not just to us but also to others. A simple act of kindness can be more meaningful than materialistic things.

Coming from a middle-class family, I sometimes wish for those luxuries. However, I remind myself that kindness defines me, not material things. People will remember me for my kindness, not my possessions. Therefore, it is important to look beyond material things. People should be valued for who they are, not their possessions.

Dr Stya Paul’s philanthropy inspires me. What was even better was that he never bragged about what he did for others. He believed in the act of giving and not talking about it. I want to contribute to society, especially for those in need.

My parents and teachers played a significant role in instilling values in me. They taught me right from wrong, respected my opinions, and gave me the space to develop my thoughts. Their guidance has been crucial in achieving this award, especially the teachers who have guided me all through.
