The game of football boasts a rich history spanning 2000 years, finding favour among the Romans. Nevertheless, in the past century, it has transcended into the world’s most renowned sport. This captivating game involves two teams, each comprising eleven players, following rules meticulously crafted by FIFA, an acronym for ‘Fédération Internationale de Football Association’ in French. At a quadrennial cadence, FIFA orchestrates the FIFA World Cup, a global spectacle that unites nations in the pursuit of footballing glory.

Brazil has etched its name in football history, clinching the coveted cup on five occasions in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. Closer to home, football enjoys substantial popularity in India, particularly in Bengal and Goa. The colonial era witnessed Indian teams confronting British adversaries, often under the challenging condition of playing barefoot. An iconic moment occurred in 1911 when Mohun Bagan, an Indian club, defied the odds and emerged victorious against a British team, etching their triumph in the annals of history by securing the IFA Shield.

This historic match resonates in the hearts of Bengalis even today. In contemporary times, football is experiencing a resurgence in India, spurred by the inception of the Indian Super League (ISL). This league has kindled a renewed interest in the sport, captivating the imaginations of fans across the nation. As football gains momentum, it signifies not just a game but a cultural phenomenon that unites people across diverse backgrounds.
