As part of the ongoing Math Week celebrations, Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, organised a vibrant and interactive activity for students of classes III to V. This session, focusing on the concept of multiplication, aimed to blend fun with learning, ensuring that students grasped the mathematical concept engagingly and practically.

The activity was meticulously designed to cater to the varying learning levels of students across the three grades. Each class was divided into four teams, fostering teamwork and collaboration. The format was simple yet innovative: Students generated numbers using dice and then calculated their product through continued multiplication.

This approach provided tactile and visual reinforcement of multiplication skills, making the concept less abstract and more relatable. The hands-on nature of the activity allowed students to directly engage with numbers, turning what might be a routine exercise into an enjoyable challenge.

Practical Learning Through Play

In today’s educational landscape, integrating interactive techniques has become crucial for effective learning. Apeejay School’s Math Week activity underscored this philosophy by emphasising practical application. Students not only strengthened their calculation skills but also gained confidence in applying these concepts to solve problems.

The activity’s structure encouraged students to think critically and work collaboratively. The dynamic pace of the game ensured that all participants remained actively involved, further enhancing their focus and retention.

Teachers overseeing the event remarked on the enthusiasm displayed by the students. This activity brought out the competitive spirit in a positive way, allowing students to challenge themselves while having fun. It’s amazing to see how something as simple as rolling dice can stimulate students’ interest in Mathematics.

According to Ms Manisha Narayanan, PRT, who teaches Math, “Fun activities are crucial in teaching multiplication because they engage students in a way that makes learning
enjoyable and effective. When students enjoy what they are learning, they are more likely to participate and retain information. Fun activities often involve interactive, hands-on experiences that help students to better understand mathematical concepts. Incorporating such activities in teaching multiplication can create a more dynamic classroom environment, making learning enjoyable and memorable.”

These activities also contribute to building confidence among young learners. By tackling mathematical problems in a playful setting, students overcame their apprehensions and began to view multiplication as an exciting puzzle rather than a daunting task.

A Step Towards Holistic Education

The Math Week stands as a testament to the institute’s commitment to holistic education. The multiplication activity on Day 3 showcased the school’s dedication to blending traditional knowledge with modern pedagogical strategies. It left students looking forward to more such creative initiatives in their academic journey.

The Math Week at Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, has been more than just a series of exercises; it’s been a celebration of the joy of learning. The interactive multiplication activity exemplified this spirit, leaving both students and teachers inspired. As the week progresses, it promises even more opportunities for young learners to explore and enjoy the fascinating world of Math.
