Every year, on the first Sunday of May, people around the world come together to celebrate World Laughter Day. This special day serves as a reminder of the power and importance of laughter in our lives. Laughter is a universal language that transcends barriers of culture, language, and nationality. It has the remarkable ability to connect people, relieve stress, and promote overall well-being.
The concept of World Laughter Day was introduced by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the Laughter Yoga movement. Laughter Yoga combines laughter exercises with deep breathing techniques to promote physical and emotional health. Since its inception in 1998, World Laughter Day has grown in popularity, with events and laughter clubs organised in cities worldwide.
On World Laughter Day, people participate in various activities such as laughter yoga sessions, stand-up comedy shows, flash mobs, and community laughter events. These activities aim to spread joy and positivity, reminding us to laugh more and stress less. In addition to promoting laughter as a form of entertainment, World Laughter Day also highlights the therapeutic benefits of laughter.

According to Meenu Chugh, PRT Yoga and Physical Education at Apeejay Svran Global, Faridabad, “Yoga is an experiential science. The miracle of Yoga cannot be felt without experiencing it and what can be easier to experience than a good laugh. So laughter Yoga is a bliss to those who cannot practice asanas otherwise. Pranayama is one of the important limb of Ashtanga Yoga which comprises of breathing practices.
“Laughter Yoga is the combination of breathing practices and laughing activity which leads to better heart health and respiratory health.
It has the capacity to lift up the mood which helps in reducing stress by reducing cortisol levels , improving the levels of endorphins which are known as happy hormones and leads to better health and well being.”

“So we conducted laughter Yoga in our classes for the young learners, which they enjoyed a lot and had a small session for older students also which was equally enjoyed by them as well,” added Ms Chugh.
The best part of Laughter Yoga is that it can be done at any age. Research has shown that laughter can have a profound impact on both physical and mental health. It boosts the immune system, lowers stress hormones, and improves cardiovascular health. Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, promoting a sense of happiness and well-being.
In a world facing numerous challenges, World Laughter Day serves as a beacon of hope and positivity. So, on this day, let’s embrace the gift of laughter and spread smiles wherever we go. After all, as Charlie Chaplin once said, “A day without laughter is a day wasted.”
