Field trips are an enriching experience for any student during their academic journey. To provide the same, Apeejay Institute of Technology- School of Architecture & Planning (AIT-SAP) recently organised a field trip for its second-semester B.Arch students. The students visited an under-construction residence designed by Atrey and Associates.

This excursion offered the students a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the intricacies of form-based residential design, enhancing their educational journey with practical insights and real-world applications.

The field trip was meticulously planned to provide an immersive experience, allowing students to explore the critical role of site visits in the architectural design process. The primary focus was to help them understand how various architectural elements are integrated to create a cohesive and functional residence. By examining the unique features of this form-based residence, students developed a deeper appreciation for this design approach and its significance in the evolution of architecture.

Guiding the students through this educational journey was a team of experienced architects from AIT-SAP. The faculty members included Ar. Batul Zainab, Ar. Tanuja Bhandari, Ar. Nida Hasan, Ar. Vaani Dua, Ar. Vishakha Garg, and Ar. Deeksha Singh. Their presence and expertise facilitated deeper discussions and a more comprehensive understanding of the architectural concepts being explored. The interaction between students and faculty in a real-world setting fostered an environment of critical thinking and creative exploration.

Throughout the visit, students engaged in detailed observations and analyses of the construction processes. They examined various stages of the project, from foundation work to structural frameworks, and studied the materials and techniques employed. This hands-on learning experience enabled them to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications, enhancing their overall comprehension of architectural principles.

One of the key aspects of the field trip was the focus on the distinctive features of form-based design. Students observed how the design approach prioritises the form and function of the residence, ensuring that each element serves a specific purpose while contributing to the overall aesthetic and usability of the space. This experience highlighted the importance of considering both form and function in architectural design, reinforcing concepts taught in the classroom.

Moreover, the field trip provided students with a glimpse into the professional world of architecture. They observed the collaboration between architects, engineers, and construction workers, gaining insights into the complexities and challenges of managing a construction project. This exposure to the professional environment was invaluable in preparing them for their future careers in architecture.

In conclusion, the field trip to the Atrey and Associates construction site was a significant educational experience for the second-semester B.Arch students at AIT-SAP. It offered them a practical understanding of form-based residential design and emphasised the importance of site visits in the architectural process. The guidance of experienced faculty members enriched the learning experience, fostering critical thinking and creative exploration. This excursion not only enhanced the students’ knowledge and skills but also provided them with a realistic perspective on the professional practice of architecture.
