As strange as it may sound but it is true. Debating is a key life skill. After all, a good argument prevents wars, fights and conflicts of all kinds. To know one’s case well and present one’s points in an impactful manner does much of the work in almost every walk of life. Debates are not just any run of the mill activities, but the training of one’s critical faculties.
Aware of the importance of this exercise, Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri, Haryana recently organised an inter house English debate competition for primary classes, thereby giving students a platform to showcase their exceptional speaking and critical thinking skills. The topic of the debate also highlighted a pressing concern among the current youth, ‘Reading books is better than watching movies’. As expected, the topic sparked an engaging and insightful discussion among the young participants who connected with the topic and brought many relatable arguments and observations from their lives.

Students from Gautam, Vivekananda, and Nanak Houses took part in the competition, displaying their knowledge and debating prowess. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from class 5 students who presented their arguments with clarity and confidence, making it a memorable competition.
Bharat from class 5, student of Gautam House emerged victorious, securing the first position in the debate. With his compelling arguments in favor of reading books, he emphasised the mental stimulation and knowledge gained through reading and highlighting how books offer a depth of understanding and creativity that movies often cannot.

Parth Goyal from Vivekananda house secured the second position, with his thought-provoking points that balanced both sides of the debate. While Pratishtha from Nanak House claimed the third position by delivering a strong and well-articulated argument in favor of movies, focusing on their visual appeal and ability to bring stories to life.
The competition was judged by a panel of experienced educators, who commended the participants for their effort, research, and presentation skills. Principal, Dr. Vineet Vashishtha, declared the results and distributed certificates to the winners. He also took the opportunity to encourage all the students to continue participating in such activities to enhance their communication skills and knowledge. The event concluded on a positive note with a huge applause from the audience, celebrating the talent and hard work of the participants.
