Dance in schools fosters creativity, discipline, and self-expression. It enhances physical fitness, builds confidence, encourages teamwork, and supports cultural appreciation through engaging and inclusive performing arts experiences. Meet Maahi Meena of Class VI-B from Apeejay School, Saket.
In a candid interview, this avid 11-year-old kathak dancer talks about how learning this art form has changed her for the better.
What got you interested in learning kathak?
My mother inspired me to learn kathak because she loves dancing. I’ve been practising for five years now. Kathak has taught me the value of hard work. Just like in studies, dance also needs a lot of practice, focus, and dedication. It has made me more disciplined. I enjoy both solo and group performances.

How does your school support your passion for dance?
My school is very supportive. When I miss classes due to practice or performances, my teachers help me catch up by giving a proper brief of the lessons. This way, I can focus on dance without any stress. The school also organises many cultural events and stage performances like World Day, which allows me to perform.
Is there a performance that is very special or memorable to you?
Yes, one of my most memorable performances was during an event organised by my guru. We performed a classical performance of Radha and Krishna. It was a beautiful and emotional experience for me.
What do you love most about kathak – storytelling, rhythm, or expressions?
All these parts together make kathak very special. I enjoy expressing stories through my hands and facial expressions, dancing to the rhythm of music, and truly feeling every moment while performing.
How do you balance your academics with your dance practice?
I follow a timetable that helps me manage both my studies and dance rehearsals. I give proper time to my school work and my dance practice. My mother supports me a lot and helps me stay organised.
What has been the most challenging part of learning this dance?
The most challenging part was doing chakras (spins). I used to have trouble balancing, but with regular practice, I slowly improved. I can do up to 20 chakras now!
Has dancing brought any changes in your personality?
Yes, kathak has made me more confident in daily life. It has helped me understand people’s feelings better through expression. I feel calmer, focused, and expressive — even when I’m speaking to others.
