Riya Rana is a name synonymous with a future philanthropist. This compassionate yet lettered HR professional believes in the adage – kindness is contagious. In a candid interview, the alumnus of Apeejay Institute of Management & Engineering Technical Campus (AIMETC), Jalandhar shares a few cherished friendships and learnings.

Tell us about yourself.

There’s no greater fulfilment than lending a hand to those in need — be it comforting an elderly, rescuing an abandoned pet, or simply being there for someone going through a tough time. It’s in these moments of selflessness that my heart feels truly alive.

Where are you recently placed?

I am at present working as an Executive Trainee at HDFC LIFE as Human Resources. I joined in 2023; it has only been nine months since I started working.

Tell us about your college life.

College life has been quite a journey filled with late-night study sessions, unforgettable friendships, and moments of self-discovery. From navigating challenging courses to discovering new passions, every experience has shaped me into who I am today. And amidst all the chaos, there’s a beauty in the growth and the memories we create along the way.

Share a few nostalgic memories from AIMETC?

Those were the days! Skipping account’s class to sneak off to our favourite chai spot with friends, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Who can forget the thrill of watching horror movies in class, trying not to get caught? Those rebellious moments are etched in our memories forever, reminding us of the mischief and camaraderie that made college unforgettable.

How was the faculty?

They were outstanding. I got to learn a lot from them – from theory to practical aspects of how the HR sector works.

What are your dreams and goals?

True success isn’t just about personal achievements but about lifting others up along the way. My goal is to reach the heights of success, not just for myself, but to have the means to make a positive impact in the world. Whether it’s providing shelter for stray animals, helping those in need, or living a simple life in harmony with nature, my aspirations are rooted in compassion and making a difference.

Your comments on the brain drain trend.

Brain drain is a complex issue that deeply impacts both the countries losing talent and the ones gaining it. While it’s understandable for individuals to seek better opportunities elsewhere, the long-term consequences can be detrimental, leading to a loss of expertise and innovation in their home countries. It’s crucial for policymakers to address the root causes of brain drain, such as lack of opportunities or unfavourable working conditions, to retain talent and foster growth domestically while also promoting global collaboration and knowledge exchange.

How did college help you hone your skills?

The institute has truly been instrumental in honing my public speaking skills. Through platforms like debates, pinnacles, and activities organised by the HR Club, I’ve had the opportunity to not only improve my communication abilities but also to gain confidence in expressing my ideas effectively. These experiences have been invaluable in my personal and professional growth, preparing me for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Any message for the students of the institute.

As you navigate through your academic journey, remember that each day is a chance to learn, grow, and make meaningful connections. Embrace the challenges, celebrate your achievements, and never underestimate the power of perseverance. Your time here is not just about acquiring knowledge but also about discovering your passions and shaping your future. Make the most of every opportunity, both inside and outside the classroom, and remember that your experience at the institute is what you make of it. Believe in yourself, stay curious, and never stop reaching for your dreams.
