Becoming a Chartered Accountant is a rigorous yet rewarding process that requires dedication and commitment. It is one of the toughest exams in India and alumnus of Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar Pallav Chhabra can vouch for the same. He is a CA by profession, who cleared the exam after three decisive attempts. The alumnus has a simple mantra behind clearing the exam, “Roam around less, sleep less and study more.”

Giving tips to aspirants, the alumnus says, “It is very simple. If you sleep for 8 hours, then there would be someone who would out-study you. Remember it is a competitive exam. Only 4% of people qualify. If you want to reach there, you have to study intensely. This exam only requires rigorous study and nothing more. So spend less time watching television or with friends and work more on your target.”

So what are the steps aspirants can follow to become a CA. Here are 10 ways that can help them navigate the path to being a Chartered Accountant:

1. Obtain a Bachelor’s Degree: Begin by earning a bachelor’s degree in either accounting, finance, or a related field from an accredited university or college. This will provide you with a strong foundation in accounting principles and business concepts.

2. Enroll in an Accredited Programme: Join an accredited professional accounting programme that aligns with the requirements of the accounting profession.

3. Complete Required Coursework: Successfully complete the coursework required by the professional accounting programme. This typically covers subjects such as financial accounting, auditing, taxation, management accounting, and business law.

4. Gain Practical Experience: Obtain practical experience through internships, part-time jobs, or entry-level positions in accounting firms, corporations, or government agencies. This hands-on experience will provide valuable insights into real-world accounting practices and enhance your skills.

5. Prepare for Professional Exams: Preparing for and passing the professional exams administered by the respective accounting body will give an added advantage. These exams evaluate your knowledge and understanding of accounting principles, standards, and regulations. Dedicate sufficient time for studying and consider enrolling in preparatory courses or utilizing study materials provided by the accounting body.

6. Secure Professional Training: Once you have passed the exams, you will need to complete a period of professional training, often referred to as an “articled training” or “articleship.” This involves working under the supervision of a qualified Chartered Accountant, gaining practical experience in various accounting areas.

7. Register with the Professional Body: Register with the professional accounting body in your country to become a student member. This will provide access to resources, networking opportunities, and support throughout your journey to becoming a Chartered Accountant.

8. Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Engage in continuous learning and professional development activities to stay updated with changes in accounting standards, regulations, and industry trends. Participate in workshops, seminars, and online courses offered by the accounting body to enhance your skills and knowledge.

9. Professional Ethics and Integrity: Uphold high ethical standards and integrity throughout your career as a Chartered Accountant. Adhere to the professional code of conduct, maintain confidentiality, and prioritize ethical decision-making in all aspects of your work.

10. Obtain Chartered Accountant Designation: After successfully completing all the educational requirements, professional exams, practical training, and meeting any additional criteria set by the accounting body, you will be eligible to apply for the Chartered Accountant designation. Once approved, you can officially use the title and enjoy the benefits and recognition associated with being a Chartered Accountant.

Remember, the specific requirements and steps may vary depending on the country or accounting body you are associated with. It is essential to research and follow the guidelines provided by the relevant accounting body in your jurisdiction.
