Apeejay Institute of Design’s 2nd semester GDP Foundation students recently undertook an educational visit to the National Gallery of Modern Art as part of their academic curriculum aimed at enhancing their understanding of Indian art and culture. The visit proved to be a highly enriching experience, offering students the rare opportunity to observe original masterpieces created by some of the most celebrated artists of modern India.
Recognised as one of the country’s premier art institutions, the gallery houses an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and contemporary artworks. As students explored its diverse exhibits, they gained deeper insights into artistic techniques, styles, and the evolution of modern Indian art.
A highlight of the visit was the opportunity to closely study the works of renowned artists. The paintings of Raja Ravi Varma captivated students with their blend of Indian mythological themes and European realism. Equally impactful were the works of Amrita Sher-Gil, whose portrayals of rural life and women reflected emotional depth and social sensitivity. The bold, vibrant creations of M. F. Husain further inspired students with their modern interpretation of Indian identity.
The artworks of Rabindranath Tagore and Nandalal Bose also drew significant attention. Their creations demonstrated a seamless blend of tradition and innovation, encouraging students to appreciate how art can communicate cultural and emotional narratives through elements like line, form, and texture.

Beyond its academic value, the visit was deeply inspiring. Viewing original artworks allowed students to connect theoretical learning with real-world artistic expression. Many participants expressed renewed motivation to enhance their own creative practices after witnessing the dedication and brilliance of these masters.
Sharing his thoughts Devansh Panchal expressed, “During the visit, we explored various paintings created by different artists. Each artwork reflected unique styles, techniques, and ideas. We observed how artists used colours, textures, and composition to express their thoughts and emotions. Our teachers guided us throughout the gallery and explained about the artists, their backgrounds, and the time periods they belonged to. They also helped us understand different art techniques and the historical context behind the paintings. Overall, the visit was informative and enjoyable. It helped us gain a better understanding of art and made learning more interesting outside the classroom.”
“Our recent visit was an enriching and memorable experience. The gallery itself felt like a blend of history and creativity even before we stepped inside. We spent several hours exploring the beautifully curated halls, each filled with remarkable works of modern and contemporary Indian art. As we walked through the galleries, we came across paintings, sculptures, and installations created by some of India’s most celebrated artists,” added another GDP Foundation student Veer Suri.

He further added, “Each piece told a unique story; some reflected India’s cultural heritage, while others expressed social issues and modern perspectives. What made the visit truly special was the calm and inspiring atmosphere. The quiet surroundings allowed us to observe every detail closely and reflect on the meaning behind the artworks. We also gained a deeper understanding of how Indian art has evolved over time, from traditional styles to more experimental and modern forms. Overall, the time we spent at the gallery was both educational and enjoyable, leaving us with lasting impressions and valuable knowledge about Indian modern art.”
