The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar, marked Doordarshan Day with creativity, enthusiasm, and a deep sense of pride in India’s broadcasting heritage. The event paid tribute to India’s first national television channel, Doordarshan, which has played a transformative role in shaping the country’s media landscape and cultural narrative.
The celebration commenced with engaging sessions that traced Doordarshan’s illustrious journey since its inception. Students highlighted how the channel brought families together, offered diverse content, and emerged as a credible source of information and entertainment for millions of viewers across the nation. These reflections helped participants connect the glorious past of Doordarshan with the challenges and opportunities of today’s rapidly evolving media ecosystem.
Adding vibrancy to the occasion, a spirited debate competition on the India–Pakistan cricket match was organised. Students confidently presented their viewpoints, combining wit, research, and eloquence. The healthy exchange of ideas not only brought energy to the celebration but also showcased the students’ ability to analyse sports beyond entertainment, linking it with larger cultural and national narratives.
The programme also featured discussions on the invaluable contributions of media stalwarts whose pioneering work continues to inspire young professionals. By recalling their journeys, students reflected on the values of dedication, credibility, and creativity that have kept Doordarshan relevant across generations.

In her address, Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra lauded the students’ efforts and stressed on the cultural importance of the day. She remarked, “Doordarshan is not merely a television channel; it is an emotion woven into the cultural fabric of India. It has stood as a witness to our nation’s progress and as a medium that brought families, communities, and the nation together. Our students, through today’s celebration, have not only revived its legacy but also reflected on the responsibility of future media professionals to uphold values of truth, credibility, and cultural richness.”
Dr. Dhingra further applauded the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication for their vision in curating such an enriching programme. She emphasised that these initiatives encourage students to think critically, communicate effectively, and embrace their role as responsible storytellers and media leaders of tomorrow.
The celebration of Doordarshan Day at ACFA was thus much more than a tribute; it was a reminder of the enduring power of media to inform, unite, and inspire. The event concluded on a high note, with students taking away not only admiration for Doordarshan’s legacy but also a renewed commitment to carry forward its ethos in their future careers.
