Scholar-Journalist of the Week: Growing Up

A Commerce student from Apeejay School, Rama Mandi in Jalandhar, Ananya Sharma, like many others, spent the last two years at home due to Covid-19-imposed lockdown. A single child, she often missed being with her friends in school. During this period of seclusion, Ananya pursued her hobbies to give herself some break from academics. In an interview, she shares her thoughts about how she managed to overcome this stressful period of her life. Read On:

How did the idea for the write-up ‘Growing up’ come to you?

Tiresome study hours at home during Covid-19 began to weigh down on me. And so, I decided to pursue some of my interests and alter my study pattern by adding short breaks to the schedule.

As the Covid-19 lockdown lifted in Punjab, I once went for a walk with my grandmother. After a long gap, I had started to venture outside my home. I felt fortunate and surreal to even visit a park near to my residence. The nation-wide situation was saddening and it was a difficult period for me mentally. During the walk, it occurred to me how in these two years I have grown up alone. The most difficult part was not being able to enjoy the company of friends. I often felt lonely at home.

So, what did you do to help the situation?

I started to read books and maintain a journal. I used to write about my daily struggles and ups and downs.

What kind of books do you like to read?

My favourite genres are mystery and fantasy. I look up to Leigh Bardugo, author of the novel ‘Shadow and Bone’  

Is this your first attempt at writing?

Yes. This is the very first piece I have written.

What did your writing process look like?

The piece, ‘Growing Up’ is a by-product of my thoughts and emotions. Therefore, it did not take me a long time to pen it down. I just recorded what I felt and later proofread the draft.

Your inspiration?

A friend of mine encouraged me to start writing. She is a published author whose work finds space in many websites, magazines and journals.

What is your career aspiration?

I want to become a Chartered Accountant.

To write well, observe your surroundings. To improve your vocabulary, read newspapers daily.
