Learning comes alive at the mini market
Young learners at Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri, explore buying, selling and everyday market interactions through experiential learning
Tell me, and I forget; teach me, and I may remember; involve me, and I learn. Apeejay School Charkhi Dadri, organised an engaging experiential learning activity, Explore the Market, for students of Classes nursery to II. Conducted under the guidance of Mrs Anu, Activity In-charge, the initiative aimed to familiarise young learners with the functioning of a market through an enjoyable, interactive and hands-on experience.
The school premises were transformed into a colourful miniature marketplace, with different stalls and shops representing a real-life market. Vegetable and fruit stalls, along with shops displaying everyday items, created a lively setting that instantly captured the curiosity and enthusiasm of the young learners.
Students actively participated by taking on the roles of buyers and sellers. Through role play, they were introduced to essential market-related terms such as buyer, seller, shopkeeper, customer, price, purchase, fruits and vegetables. They learnt how to select products, enquire about prices, make choices and interact politely during a shopping experience.
The activity provided students with an opportunity to connect classroom concepts with everyday life. Rather than learning about markets only through textbooks, they explored the concept through observation, communication, interaction and role play. This experiential approach helped strengthen their communication skills, confidence, social interaction and decision-making abilities.
The activity also introduced learners to basic financial awareness in an age-appropriate manner. Concepts related to prices, buying and selling were presented through practical situations, making the learning process both meaningful and enjoyable.
The initiative reflected the vision of NEP 2020, which emphasises experiential, activity-based and holistic learning. The enthusiastic participation of the students transformed the activity into a vibrant learning experience filled with curiosity, creativity and joy.
Principal Dr Vineet Vasishtha appreciated the initiative and commended the efforts of the teachers and students. “Experiential learning enables children to understand concepts by connecting them with real-life situations. The activity provided our young learners with a wonderful opportunity to experience the roles of buyers and sellers while learning about fruits, vegetables, shops and everyday transactions. I appreciate the sincere efforts of Mrs Anu and the teachers in creating such an engaging learning environment. Such activities nurture confidence, communication, observation and social skills while beautifully reflecting the spirit of NEP 2020,” Dr Vasishtha shared.
The activity successfully turned an ordinary school day into an interactive marketplace where learning came alive through participation and experience.
