The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to conduct the second phase of Class 10 Board exams in 2026, marking a significant shift in its assessment system. This year, over 6.68 lakh students have registered for the second attempt, reflecting strong participation in the newly introduced two-exam format.
According to official data, the total number of candidates includes 402,643 male students, 266,209 female students, and two candidates in the ‘Other’ category. The first phase of the examinations was held between February 17 and March 10, with results declared on April 15. The second phase is scheduled to begin on May 15, 2026.
The initiative aims to provide students with an additional opportunity to improve their scores. A majority of candidates are appearing for multiple subjects, with approximately 2.79 lakh students opting for two subjects, nearly 1.97 lakh choosing three subjects, and about 1.92 lakh appearing for a single subject.
A notable trend is the high number of students registering for improvement rather than just passing. Around 5.25 lakh students have enrolled for improvement exams, while 85,285 are appearing for compartment exams. Additionally, 57,914 students fall under both categories.
In terms of subject preferences, Science has emerged as the most popular choice, with over 4.74 lakh students reappearing for the subject. Mathematics, Social Science, and English Language and Literature follow closely. Other subjects include Hindi, Sanskrit, regional languages, and electives like Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, and Home Science.
CBSE released the official date sheet on April 23. The examinations will be conducted from May 15 to May 21, with major subjects like Mathematics and English scheduled on the first day, and Social Science on the last. Most exams will be held from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.
