Tell us about yourself
I am Sumedha Banthia, and I am proud to hold the title of Asian Silver Medallist in Inline Hockey. Alongside my achievements in sports, I am currently thriving as a Technical Solutions Engineer at Arista Networks. I earned my B. Tech degree from SRM Institute of Science and Technology, laying the foundation for my professional journey. My sporting accomplishments extend beyond borders, as I’ve had the honour of representing India on the global stage at prestigious events such as the World Roller Games and the Asian Roller Skating Championship in Inline Hockey. Beyond the realm of athletics, I am a multifaceted individual with a deep-seated passion for singing, baking, networking, and, of course, skating. These diverse interests enrich my life, allowing me to explore creativity, discipline, and joy in equal measure. As I continue to pursue excellence in both my professional and personal endeavours, I remain dedicated to fostering a holistic approach to life, driven by passion and determination.
What does a typical day look like?
Rising with the sun at 6:00 AM, my day begins with an hour-long exercise session, setting the tone for productivity and vitality. Energised and refreshed, I swiftly prepare for the day ahead, ensuring a seamless transition from home to the office. By 8:00 AM, I’m already immersed in the hustle and bustle of the workday, tackling tasks and collaborating with colleagues until the clock strikes 5:00 PM. Upon returning home, typically around 7:30 PM, the atmosphere shifts to one of relaxation and connection. Sometimes, I indulge my passion for baking and other evenings are reserved for quality time with family, whether engaging in games or engaging in leisurely conversations with friends. These cherished moments of bonding and laughter serve as a refreshing counterbalance to the demands of the workday, enriching my life with joy and fulfilment.
Tell us about your school life.
Growing up, my school life deviated from the conventional routine experienced by many of my peers. From the tender age of 3, I embarked on a journey into the world of skating, a passion that became an integral part of my daily existence. I used to go for morning practice as early as 4 AM and by the time most children were still in the embrace of slumber, I had already completed my morning practice session, returning home just in time to prepare for the school day ahead. Despite the early start, I managed to arrive punctually at school by 8 AM, ready to immerse myself in academics. However, my commitment to skating didn’t wane with the school bell’s dismissal. Evenings were reserved for further training, with my afternoons packed with extracurricular activities such as classical singing classes and academic tuitions. The rhythm of my days was a relentless cycle of discipline and dedication, yet amidst the rigorous schedule, I found a balance. Despite the demanding nature of my dual pursuits, I maintained a strong academic standing, consistently ranking among the top performers in my class. My ability to navigate the demands of both sports and studies underscored not only my determination but also my capacity for time management and resilience. Through the rigors of this unconventional school life, I learned invaluable lessons in perseverance, organisation, and the power of passion to propel one towards excellence.
Share a few nostalgic memories from Apeejay?
Among the myriad memories that I hold dear, one stands out with particular poignancy —the year I earned my Asian Silver Medal coincided with the Meraki fest at my school. It was an occasion filled with joy and celebration, made even more special by a heartfelt gesture from Apeejay School. For the first time in its history, the school created a banner adorned with my picture, proudly displaying me holding the coveted medal, and hung it on the front gate. The overwhelming sense of pride and elation that washed over me upon seeing that banner remains indelibly etched in my memory. To be recognised and celebrated in such a public and meaningful way by my school community was a moment of pure joy and validation. It wasn’t just about the medal itself but about the acknowledgment of my dedication and hard work, and the collective pride shared by my teachers, peers, and school administration. That banner symbolised more than just an individual achievement; it represented the unwavering support and encouragement that I received from Apeejay School throughout my journey. It served as a reminder of the power of community, and the profound impact that gestures of recognition and appreciation can have on an individual’s sense of belonging and motivation. Indeed, that memory continues to inspire me, serving as a testament to the transformative potential of recognition and encouragement in fostering personal growth and success.
How were the teachers at Apeejay?
The teachers at Apeejay were more than just educators to me; they were an extension of my family. Their unwavering support transcended the boundaries of academics, encompassing every facet of my life’s journey. Through moments of laughter and tears, they stood by my side, offering guidance, encouragement, and solace as needed. In times of triumph, they celebrated my achievements with genuine pride, fuelling my motivation to reach greater heights. Conversely, during moments of adversity, they provided a comforting presence, offering words of wisdom and reassurance to navigate through challenges. Their dedication went beyond the confines of the classroom, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie that enriched my educational experience profoundly. In essence, the teachers at Apeejay exemplified the true essence of mentorship, embodying compassion, empathy, and unwavering support. Their impact on my life extends far beyond the realm of education, shaping me into the person I am today and instilling within me values that will endure a lifetime.
What is your dream and goal in life?
From a young age, my dream and ultimate goal have been centred on serving my country and making a meaningful contribution to its advancement. At the age of 16, I had the privilege of achieving this aspiration, an accomplishment that fills me with immense pride to this day. I owe all my achievements to my coach, my parents, family, and my school. Without their unwavering support and guidance, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My coach has been my mentor, pushing me to excel in my sport and guiding me through every step of my journey. His expertise and dedication have shaped my skills and fuelled my passion for my chosen field. My parents and family have been my rock, supporting me through every high and low. Their love, sacrifices, and belief in my potential have given me the strength and determination to overcome obstacles and pursue my dreams. I am grateful for their unwavering encouragement and unwavering support. Presently, my focus lies on excelling in the field I am currently engaged in – a commitment to continuous learning and growth propels me forward. My goal is clear: to become the best version of myself in my chosen profession. I am dedicated to honing my skills, expanding my knowledge base, and embracing new challenges that come my way. By striving for excellence in my work, I aim to make a positive impact not only in my immediate sphere but also in the broader context of societal progress. Each day presents an opportunity for growth and improvement, and I am determined to seize it with enthusiasm and diligence.
Any message for the students of the school.
Indeed, the school holds a special place in our hearts as a sanctuary for both intellectual and personal growth. It stands not only as a temple of learning but also as a playground where life’s challenges are encountered, navigated, and overcome. School life is a precious chapter in our journey, one filled with moments of discovery, friendship, and resilience. Within the walls of the school, we are not only educated in academics but also in life lessons that shape our character and fortitude. It’s where we learn to navigate and overcome obstacles, and to embrace the diversity of experiences that prepare us for the world beyond. The memories forged during school days, shared with friends and cherished teachers, become treasured treasures that we carry with us throughout our lives. Looking back on those days, we do so with fondness and gratitude, reminiscing about the laughter, the camaraderie, and the invaluable lessons learned. School is not just a place of academic instruction but a crucible of personal growth, where we learn, laugh, and ultimately, leave with a smile, knowing that we have been enriched by the journey.
Your comments on the brain drain trend.
The decision to pursue opportunities abroad is not merely a trend but rather a deeply personal choice. For many individuals, the allure of international prospects beckons as a pathway to realizing their dreams and ambitions. In a globalized world, borders are increasingly porous, facilitating movement and exchange across continents. Thus, if individuals feel compelled to venture beyond their homeland in pursuit of their aspirations, they should be encouraged to do so. While opportunities undoubtedly exist within India’s borders, the reality of a dense population and fierce competition cannot be overlooked. Securing coveted positions often necessitates standing out amidst a sea of talent, a feat that requires exceptional skill, determination, and sometimes, luck. However, the decision to pursue opportunities abroad should not be perceived as a rejection of one’s homeland, but rather as a testament to the individual’s courage and foresight in seizing opportunities wherever they may arise. Ultimately, whether one chooses to remain in their native country or explore opportunities abroad, the key lies in aligning personal aspirations with available avenues for growth and fulfilment. By fostering an environment that encourages individuals to pursue their dreams, regardless of geographical boundaries, societies can harness the full potential of their diverse talents and contributions.
How did Apeejay help you hone your skills?
During my 10th to 12th standard years, I was deeply involved in intense training camps spanning three months each for international championships, often requiring me to miss regular school attendance. Yet, throughout this demanding period, Apeejay School stood unwaveringly by my side, providing invaluable support in my pursuit of athletic excellence. Despite my absences, the teachers at Apeejay remained steadfast in their commitment to my education, going above and beyond to ensure I didn’t fall behind. Upon returning from championships, I found a nurturing environment waiting for me at school. Teachers generously offered their time and expertise to help me catch up on missed lessons, patiently clearing doubts and even providing additional instruction on complex topics. Their dedication and encouragement played a pivotal role in my academic success, enabling me to achieve remarkable results—a perfect 10 CGPA in 10th standard and 94% in 12th. Such achievements would have been unattainable without the unwavering support of the Apeejay faculty, whose belief in my potential propelled me forward. Moreover, Apeejay School’s recognition of my athletic accomplishments extended beyond mere words of encouragement. Their tangible support manifested in the form of a 100% scholarship awarded to me upon securing my first national medal—a gesture that was not only alleviated as a powerful affirmation of my dedication and talent. Through their actions, Apeejay demonstrated a profound commitment to nurturing holistic development, embodying the ethos of a supportive educational community that empowers students to excel in all facets of life.
