In a display of creativity and mathematical prowess, the students of class V at Apeejay School, Noida, recently participated in an engaging Intra-class competition titled ‘Junkyard Genius’. This event was not just a competition but a celebration of innovative thinking and sustainable practices among young learners.

The competition was based on the inspiring notion that ‘Go down deep enough into anything and you will find mathematics’, as articulated by Dean Schlichter. Emphasising the importance of creativity in education, the school organized an event to bolster the creative and innovative capabilities of their students.

Creative Challenges and Mathematical Solutions

Each participant was tasked with creating a mathematical toy, model, or game using only materials that would otherwise be considered junk. This approach not only promoted environmental sustainability but also pushed the students to think outside the box. The students had 45 minutes to assemble their projects, followed by two minutes to explain the mathematical concepts their creations embodied.

The entries submitted were initially evaluated by the respective Mathematics teachers, with six outstanding projects from each section selected for the showdown. The event showcased an array of ingenious creations, highlighting the students’ ability to integrate math skills with creative problem-solving.

Celebrating Young Minds and Their Creations

The results of ‘Junkyard Genius’ were truly impressive. Saarth Jain from 5D clinched the first position with his innovative design, while Samridhi Jain from 5B took home the second prize. Special recognition was given to the best entries in each class, celebrating the diverse talents across the grade. Manit Kapoor (5A), Divit Agarwal (5B), Anshita Upadhyay (5C), Angadjot (5D), and Aadhya Agrawal and Vedant Verma (5E) were conferred with the Best in Class.

In her closing remarks, Ms Smriti Samuel, the Primary In-charge, commended all the participants for their efforts and creativity. She noted the dual benefits of the competition: enhancing mathematical understanding and developing fine motor skills and mental concentration.

An Event to Remember

The ‘Junkyard Genius’ competition was more than just an academic exercise; it was a testament to the school’s commitment to fostering an environment where learning and creativity intersect seamlessly. The event not only challenged the students but also provided a platform for them to showcase their skills in a fun and competitive setting.

This event was an enriching experience not only for the students but also for the teachers and judges involved. It proved that when children are allowed to use their imagination and apply their academic knowledge, the results can be truly extraordinary.

Through such innovative competitions, Apeejay School continues to lead the way in educational excellence, preparing students to be the thinkers and leaders of tomorrow.
